As a seasoned strategy game enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the announcement of Civilization 7 has sent a thrill through my veins. The new Age system, the freedom to choose leaders and civilizations independently, and the potential for dynamic civilization evolution have caught my attention like never before.
2K Games and Firaxis Studios have officially set a launch date for what appears to be “Civilization VII.” In keeping with earlier reports, they’ve also unveiled an extended gameplay demonstration. Notably, it has been disclosed that the renowned actress Gwendoline Christie, known for her roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Star Wars,” will serve as the narrator in this upcoming strategy title. The demonstration further delves into some significant gameplay modifications players can anticipate.
In Civilization 7, a key alteration in the main gameplay mechanic involves the debut of a novel Ages system. While previous Civilization games have featured empires progressing through various eras, Civilization 7 introduces three distinct ages: Antiquity Age, Exploration Age, and Modern Age. The Antiquity Age highlights agricultural societies, the Exploration Age signifies expansion and trade interactions among empires, and the Modern Age is characterized by rapid technological advancements, some of which may be devastatingly destructive.
In Civilization 7, each era brings distinct characteristics like resources, technologies, governance options, units, and structures. Unlike previous versions, progressing from one age to another won’t erase your past accomplishments. Instead, the decisions you make in one age will shape the future, causing your empire to evolve dynamically as it moves through the ages, reflecting the choices you’ve made as its leader throughout history.
Essentially, this implies that civilizations are no longer fixed across different epochs; they’ll evolve with each new Age. Instead of maintaining the same civilization throughout all ages, it will now transform from one age to another. Players can choose to experience a single game spanning all ages or opt for separate adventures in each individual age.
In Civilization 7, a notable shift occurs in how leaders operate compared to previous versions. Instead of civilizations and leaders being intertwined, determining your strategies, unit selection, research paths, and so on, now you can pick any civilization you prefer while choosing your leader independently. Furthermore, players have the exciting new option to personalize their leaders by acquiring attributes through gameplay. For further insights, take a look at the demonstration provided below.
2023 will see the release of the game titled “Civilization 7” on February 11. It will be available for play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers.
