2025 has been an exceptional year for video games, and among the numerous titles, one standout game has become a significant surprise success – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. This fantasy RPG, developed by the modest team at Sandfall Interactive, has left players awestruck with its unique fusion of turn-based and real-time gameplay mechanics, coupled with an emotionally resonant narrative that’s garnering widespread acclaim. However, it’s intriguing to note that one of the key figures behind the game’s storyline seems a bit uneasy about the praise being showered upon it.
Charlie Cox, known for his role as Daredevil in the popular Marvel series and its upcoming continuation Daredevil: Born Again, was also a prominent voice actor for Gustave in Expedition 33. At a panel over the weekend at Washington State Summer Con, Cox shared that he’s thrilled about the game’s success but feels uncomfortable with the attention it’s garnered him because he didn’t invest much time into the project itself.
He didn’t intend to downplay it, but it seems the game is fantastic. To be honest, I’m not into gaming, haven’t played it myself – my representative asked if I wanted to lend my voice for a recording, which kept me in the studio for about four hours. The crowd laughed as he continued, “People are constantly praising its greatness and offering congratulations, but I feel like an imposter.
Indeed, I’m overjoyed to see the company prosper. It’s a delightful sight, truly. However, let me pass on a query for you; perhaps it would be more appropriate if you directed it towards someone else.” He did chuckle as he said this, but I must admit, I felt a bit uneasy.
It’s important to mention that when it comes to voice acting, the time required to complete a performance can vary greatly. For instance, Cox completed his four-hour session at Sandfall remarkably quickly, but for larger role-playing games with extensive dialogue across NPC interactions and real-time gameplay, this process often stretches over hundreds of hours. To illustrate, Tom McKay, the actor portraying Henry from Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, spent more than 500 hours in Warhorse Studios’ recording booth.
Despite his brief stint at Sandfall’s recording studio, Cox managed to make those four hours incredibly impactful. His portrayal of Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is outstanding, imbuing the character with a deep emotional depth and versatility. This, combined with Maxence Cazorla’s motion capture animation work, solidifies Cox as one of the game’s most compelling characters, and arguably the standout from its initial act.
In summary, Expedition 33, much like this outstanding performance, contributes significantly to Sandfall’s debut title’s massive success upon its release in late April. The title’s captivating plot, pioneering gameplay mechanics, and immersive narrative with compelling, well-crafted characters have earned it glowing reviews such as mine and sales of 3.3 million within a month post-launch.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is undeniably one of the top-tier games for both Xbox and PC in 2025, making it a must-play for enthusiasts of immersive RPGs. You can find this gem on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (including Xbox PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store), as well as PS5, priced at $49.99. However, you can snag it for a bargain price of just $38.09 on CDKeys due to an incredible offer. Additionally, if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can enjoy this game through your subscription.
