A legendary role-playing game series that originated on PlayStation 1 and 2 is making a comeback, though some fans may find the approach surprising. When the PlayStation was initially launched in the 90s, it served as the platform for many iconic franchises to debut. Series such as Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Tomb Raider, and countless others first appeared on PS1 and have remained relevant across generations on PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. Now, one of those original PlayStation games is slated to return after a 20-year hiatus, but specific details are scarce at this time.
Just announced with a brand new trailer, Konami, the publisher, has revealed the latest addition to their Suikoden series titled “Suikoden Star Leap“. The initial game in the series, released back in 1995 on PS1, was a massive success and led to the creation of its sequel, “Suikoden II“, which garnered even more popularity. The series continued with games like “Suikoden III“, “Suikoden IV“, and “Suikoden V“, the last one being launched in 2006. Since then, there have been a few spin-offs, but for the most part, Suikoden has remained dormant for around two decades, much to the frustration of devoted fans.
With the arrival of Suikoden Star Leap, it appears that the series is taking a new direction. The catch is that Star Leap seems unlike traditional Suikoden games, as it’s being developed for mobile devices and incorporates gacha mechanics. While the graphics displayed in the initial Suikoden Star Leap trailer are striking, reminiscent of other HD-2D games that have emerged recently, it remains unclear whether this new game will retain the RPG elements characteristic of previous Suikoden titles based on the first trailer alone.
Get ready for a fresh adventure in the Suikoden universe as Konami prepares to release it on mobile devices! In Suikoden Star Leap, you’ll journey through the world of Suikoden, set a few years before the events of Suikoden I and a couple years after Suikoden V. You can roam vibrant towns filled with life, meet both new faces and familiar characters, and embark on exciting quests. The game’s art style combines 2D-pixel character designs with 3D backgrounds, creating an engaging visual experience.
A silver lining to this underwhelming unveiling is that Suikoden is making a comeback in an exciting new form. To be precise, on March 6th (next week), Konami will launch the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. This remastered edition includes the first two games from the Suikoden series and is set to release on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. So while the news about Star Leap may have left longtime fans disheartened, the best games in the series are now more accessible than ever.
Currently, Konami has not revealed a release date for the mobile version of Suikoden Star Leap. We can expect updates within the coming weeks and months. As soon as more information surfaces, we’ll keep you posted right here on ComicBook.
