In an interview for his upcoming movie, “The Life of Chuck” (releasing in select theaters June 6th and nationwide June 13th), director Mike Flanagan shared insights about his script for the upcoming DC Universe movie based on Clayface. The character’s portrayal in “Batman: The Animated Series” served as inspiration. During the interview with ComicBook, Flanagan revealed that he’s been working on the script, which is inspired by the two-part episode “Feat of Clay.” Although the screenplay is undergoing revisions, Flanagan expressed his enthusiasm for Clayface and the animated series. He hopes that the core concepts he has laid out will remain in place when the film premieres in theaters.
Flanagan confirmed that the animated series “Batman: The Animated Series” was indeed a significant inspiration for him. He particularly mentioned the two-part episode “Feat of Clay,” featuring Ron Perlman’s performance, as having a profound impact on him. In essence, his script was heavily influenced by this series and he aspired to create a world similar to the one portrayed in “Batman: The Animated Series.” During his childhood, this animated series held the same significance for him as Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman did.
Later on, Flanagan expressed his opinions regarding the progress of the character Clayface. “I’m unsure about what they’re doing with Clayface,” he admitted. “I won’t be the one directing it, and the filmmaker will have to put their own touch on it.” He continued, “I know they’re working on the script. I’ve moved on to other projects now, I just hope it stays faithful to the essence of what I envisioned. However, it’s not my movie, so I’ll be in the crowd with you, eagerly waiting to see how it turns out.
