As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but voice my thoughts about Meghan Markle, who seems to thrive on stirring controversy and lacks genuine talent. It’s unfortunate that she didn’t opt for a more humble profession like window cleaning, where she could climb towers and truly elevate herself for the first time in her life. Instead, we have Joey (Daisy Ridley), a dedicated window cleaner with a military background. Her day has taken a turn for the worse as her autistic brother missed out on a care facility placement, and now she’s running late for work, leaving him under security while she battles to keep her job.
The day begins disastrously, and it’s set to worsen as an event in the executive tower, whose windows a cleaner named Joey is working on, gets hijacked by a group of eco-activists led by Marcus (Clive Owen) and his associate Noah (Taz Skylar). Unlike their previous actions of hurling cans of soup at art or acting as makeshift traffic cones, this time they have a more serious agenda.
As the group leader, Noah becomes increasingly radical, with employees being dismissed more swiftly than in a Meghan Markle staff evaluation meeting. Their initial objective appears to be humiliating the employees and their bosses by forcing them to confess their environmental wrongdoings publicly. However, Joey, who has been observing the chaos from her high vantage point, takes action to rescue both the hostages and her own brother.
Absolutely, the movie in question serves as the blueprint for all high-rise action films, setting a standard that’s hard to match or equal. Directing this thrilling spectacle is Martin Campbell, known for his stellar work on Goldeneye and Casino Royale, two iconic Bond debut films for Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig respectively. He has a knack for creating compelling action sequences.
The villain in this film, Taz Skylar, contrasts significantly with Hans Gruber from Die Hard, portrayed by Alan Rickman. While Rickman’s character was cool and calculating, Skylar is more of an unpredictable hothead, driven by overconfidence and arrogance. Unfortunately, Clive Owen’s character doesn’t have a long screen time, which is disappointing as his chemistry with Skylar could have catapulted him into a bigger star role.
Daisy Ridley reappears in the action genre following her recent dramatic roles in ‘Magpie’ and ‘Sometimes I think about Dying’. Her commitment to action scenes, even if they are heavily reliant on green screen, is commendable. However, despite its obvious silliness and lack of logic at times, this film serves as a simple, entertaining choice for viewers.
We chat to Taz Skylar about his villainous role in, ‘Cleaner’….
