During the excitement for the latest previews of Clockwork Revolution, Brian Fargo – founder and leader of inXile Entertainment – used social media to express his thoughts. He acknowledged that without crowdfunding, the game wouldn’t have come to fruition. In a video about the studio’s 20-year journey, he specifically mentioned the Kickstarter campaign that funded the creation of tactical RPG Wasteland 2.
On social media platform X, Fargo stated that the Kickstarter campaign for Wasteland 2 served as a longshot attempt to return to creating our desired type of role-playing games and ultimately become part of Microsoft. This effort led to the development of Clockwork Revolution.
Below, you’ll find a video that provides a 20-minute glimpse into the studio’s past, with various developers from the studio sharing their experiences working on games such as Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera. The video also includes Fargo discussing his journey in the gaming industry, starting when he established Interplay in 1983.
In the video, inXile co-founder Matt Findley expressed that they discovered it’s more enjoyable for them to propose the games they wish to create, rather than focusing on selling games that are already popular.
Chris Keenan, head of the studio, shared insights on the choice to launch a Kickstarter campaign for the funding of Wasteland 2. He reminisced about a discussion he once had with Fargo, explaining how it led to this decision.
As Keenan reminisced, he shared, “At one point, Brian spoke to me. He said something like, ‘Hey, let’s take a shot at Kickstarter with Wasteland 2. I’ll cover your expenses for a few months from my own funds… If it takes off, you’ll be the one steering the ship; if not, we’ll part ways amicably, having had a terrific journey.’ “
The latest creation from inXile, titled Clockwork Revolution, is currently being built for both PC and Xbox Series X/S. During the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, a fresh trailer was unveiled offering an impressive peek at the steampunk-inspired visuals that the upcoming game promises.
Fargo, together with Game Director Chad Moore, has unveiled some insights into the upcoming game titled “Clockwork Revolution“. The emphasis in
Fargo stated, “It was crucial for us to communicate directly with dedicated roleplaying enthusiasts and reveal the true essence of this game.” He added, “We take a brief pause, allow dialogue to flow naturally, and exhibit the mechanisms at play. The scene featuring Alfie isn’t merely dramatic; it sets the mood. This game can be ruthless, not just in battles, but in the decisions you make and the reactions of the world. It’s not only about visual spectacle, but about constructing a rich, responsive RPG that we adore and our fans anticipate.
Moore further disclosed the inner workings of the group discussions featured in Clockwork Revolution, as well as their impact on narrative development and game mechanics.
Our Kickstarter initiative served as a last-ditch effort for us to return to crafting the type of tabletop role-playing games that truly inspired us, and potentially join forces with Microsoft. This journey led to the creation of Clockwork Revolution. A heartfelt thank you to our supporters 🙏🙏🙏.
