If you’re not eagerly awaiting the opening of Clueless the musical on the West End, here’s a compelling perspective from its composer, KT Tunstall, that might change your mind.
The nineties-inspired singer-songwriter hinted that her upcoming performance would be significantly distinct from typical expectations, but she expressed it more enthusiastically as “it will feel like attending the coolest ’90s concert ever!
This movie stands out as a timeless masterpiece from its era. Unlike others from the same period, it offers a rich, in-depth character study and an undeniable sense of authenticity – depth that was rarely explored in films during that time.
Additionally, many classic films portrayed women as somewhat harsh and full of catty behavior. However, someone unfamiliar with “Clueless” might assume it follows a similar theme of ‘mean girl’ movies. Yet, that assumption is incorrect; in fact, it’s quite endearing.
Tunstall continued by expressing admiration towards the original Cher, as well as Alicia Silverstone, for their significant role in establishing the movie’s enduring reputation. In her words, “Cher on paper seems like an unappealing character.

Though she comes across as bossy due to her wealth, there’s something about Alicia Silverstone that makes you fall head over heels in love.
Her good intentions are truly captivating, a sentiment that resonates with many. There comes a time when we all think we have things figured out, only to discover that our understanding was mistaken.
In regard to composing the music for the series, Tunstall found it an intuitive decision. The task that followed was finding a way to acknowledge the cultural significance of the film after three decades, as well as acknowledging the unique essence of the ’90s.
She expressed her aspiration as, “I wanted to create an experience for you that felt like being in a ’90s musical jukebox, regardless of your preferred music genre.
In this musical, there’s a tune for everyone, no matter your music preference – be it grunge, hip hop, pop, or punk. We’ve drawn inspiration from various genres and aimed to capture the essence of those memorable ’90s tunes in our songs.

Tunstall humorously pointed out that song ideas sprang from diverse sources such as “It’s Gonna Be Me” by NSYNC and “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia, along with acts like Radiohead, The Lightning Seeds, and Supergrass.
Additionally, she discussed employing traditional methods from the 1990s for crafting every track, aiming to achieve a genuinely nostalgic ’90s vibe.
Apart from that, what other sources inspired Tunstall? She mentioned, “I watched Back to the Future, and the car in it was simply incredible, almost unbelievable!
Upon returning, I had a conversation with the director, explaining, “The yellow-plaid ensemble you see here is essentially our DeLorean, right? We need to find a way to make something special out of it.
