Lately, Codemasters disclosed they are halting work on EA Sports WRC and all upcoming rally racing simulators. As anticipated by many, this decision coincides with a series of job cuts within the studio.
Codemasters has admitted to VGC that as they phase out rally racing game development, they are also letting go of certain positions. The studio hasn’t specified the exact number of jobs being terminated, but they do mention that some employees will be reassigned to other studios and projects within EA Sports.
In a business context, we’re always adapting to better serve our customers (players) and sharpening our focus on various projects. This process involves trimming certain positions, but our goal is to reassign as many as feasible to align with our long-term objectives.
It’s not just Codemasters that has experienced job cuts within Electronic Arts; last week, EA announced that it was reducing approximately 300 positions across all its studios, including Respawn Entertainment. There have been reports suggesting that Respawn itself had to let go of around 100 employees, and also canceled a Titanfall spinoff extraction shooter project.
Regrettably, it’s not a new occurrence that Codemasters has faced layoffs recently. In fact, they made similar cuts in job positions as early as December 2023.
