Despite the fact that the F1 franchise is now a major focus for EA after acquiring Codemasters, rally racing simulations have long been an essential aspect of the developer’s history and character. However, it appears that things are changing substantially within the company.
In an official statement on their blog, Codemasters has disclosed that they are ceasing support for the development of EA Sports WRC, a game released in 2023, and have concluded their collaboration with WRC as the exclusive license was limited to only one title. Furthermore, the developers behind games like Colin McRae Rally, Dirt, and Dirt Rally, have stated that for the moment, they do not intend to produce any more rally racing simulators.
The developer announces that they have completed their work on WRC, as every grand adventure eventually concludes at its destination. In 2023, we launched EA SPORTS WRC, and the forthcoming 2024 season, including the Hard Chargers Content pack, will mark our final expansion.
At present, we’re putting development of future rally series on hold. However, fret not! The EA SPORTS WRC will carry on being accessible to both new and existing players. We hope it continues to bring you joy, excitement, and the adrenaline rush of rally racing. We put our hearts into creating this game for fans like you, and we believe you’ll keep the enthusiasm burning brightly.
Our collaboration with WRC marks a significant milestone in Codemasters’ long-standing adventure with off-road racing. Over the years, we’ve created games such as Colin McRae Rally and DiRT that have given a platform to every rally enthusiast. Our commitment has always been to innovate and offer the heart-pounding excitement of driving on the edge. We’ve united some of the most skilled racing developers, collaborated with legends in the sport, and had the privilege of spreading our passion for rallying.
“Thank you to all the fans who have and continue to be part of our rally journey.”
It’s still uncertain how this change will impact Codemasters; as of now, there’s no information about possible job cuts at the studio.
On Wednesday, I learned that EA let go of around 300 employees spread across various studios. It’s been said that about a hundred of these cuts were from Respawn Entertainment, and they even scrapped a Titanfall extraction shooter project in the process.
