COLIN FARRELL’s Dad DEAD at 83!

Colin Farrell is navigating a difficult loss.

Actor known as The Penguin, whose father Eamon Farrell was a soccer player for Shamrock Rovers in the 1960s, passed away on April 9th in Dublin, Ireland. He was 83 years old.

Eamon died tranquilly, following a prolonged battle with illness, surrounded by the tender affection of his family and the skilled attention of the Whitworth Ward team at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. This information was shared on the RIP.ie website by the Irish Times Group.

The retired athlete is also mourned by his spouse Eileen, former wife Rita, as well as Eamon Jr., Catherine, Claudine, eight stepchildren, five grandchildren such as James and Henry (Colin’s sons aged 21 and 15 respectively), and siblings Maureen, Sean, and Tommy – the latter who also played for Shamrock Rovers F.C.

After hearing about Eamon’s death, the football club posted a tribute reminiscing about his playing days.

1960 saw Eamon making his move to Rovers, having been a part of the renowned youth team Home Farm. The team shared this fact on Instagram, along with an old photo. “Eamon, a defender who represented Ireland at both minor and schoolboy levels, played alongside his elder brother Tommy during his stint at Milltown.

As a member of the victorious squad, I had the honor of playing against Shelbourne in the 1962 FAI Cup final. The unforgettable match took place before a crowd of 32,000 passionate fans.

The Rovers ended their homage with the Irish phrase, “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” which means in English, “May his soul rest with God at His side.

On April 12th, Eamon will receive a funeral service at a church in Dublin, followed by cremation, as indicated in the obituary.

After hearing about the demise of Eamon, Paul Monahan – who is Colin’s maternal uncle and godfather, as well as a renowned West End stage actor – posted Eamon’s obituary on social media. He also wrote, “It’s a very sorrowful period. I’m returning home for a brief while to pay my respects at Eamon Sr’s funeral tomorrow; may he rest in peace.

For quite some time now, Colin has offered glimpses into his personal life, such as during the 2025 SAG Awards in February, when he publicly acknowledged his parents and children while accepting the award for Best Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for “The Penguin“.

Although he has achieved fame as an actor, he confessed that earlier in life, he aspired to be a soccer player like his father and played for Castleknock Celtic F.C. during the 1980s.

Back in 2008, during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, as reported by RTE.ie, I shared that I was engrossed in my craft up until the age of 15. At that time, it seemed like my calling. However, upon reflection, I found myself drawn to something less conventional yet profoundly impactful – the realm of acting.

He also elaborated on how his personal childhood experiences have influenced the way he connects with his children, primarily by sharing movies with them.

He shared with Variety in 2023 that he originates from a background where his parents didn’t have much interest in movies. However, now films play a significant role in his relationships with his two sons. We often watch and discuss them together. Sometimes, small moments in a movie can hold immense meaning, and as a father, it’s crucial to share these insights with my children. I’ve always found that I learn a great deal from watching films.
