Colin Jost Laughs at Bill Murray’s Scarlet Johansson Joke at SNL 50

Right now, New York’s hottest club is the SNL 50 Weekend Update desk.

To put it simply, the 50th anniversary special for Saturday Night Live gathered some of the most legendary comedians who have graced the stage. Among them were former host Seth Meyers, along with current hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost, as well as Cecily Strong and Bobby Moynihan, who reappeared in their popular roles of “The Woman You Wish You Didn’t Start a Conversation With at a Party” and “Drunk Uncle.

One particularly memorable highlight during the anniversary special was when Bill Murray ranked the various anchors who have occupied the desk throughout the years. He declared Michael as the top Black anchor, followed by pairings such as Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon, Tina Poehler, original anchor Chevy Chase, and the late Norm Macdonald in his ranking of the other anchors and co-anchor teams.

When only the first position remained unoccupied and it appeared that Colin was missing from the ranking, Bill started by saying, “Alright, number one is someone who has a great sense of humor and sports a wonderful smile while snoozing in various poses with actress Scarlett Johansson.

Let me share some exciting news with you all! You may have noticed that I’ve been raving about someone extraordinary lately. Well, allow me to introduce you to the one and only, “Brian Doyle-Murry“, none other than my dear brother who has truly earned the top spot on my list of lifestyle icons.

It’s good that Colin handled the joke about his wife gracefully, still chuckling as Bill went on to say, “Apparently, Brian is quite thoughtful during romantic moments.

Over time, the Weekend Update desk has remained a constant feature on Saturday Night Live, with various comedians assuming the anchor position to greet fellow cast members and celebrity guests – even the late Gilda Radner’s character Rosanne Rosannadana, along with more recent additions like Bill Hader’s correspondent Stefon.

During the extended segment, the character portrayed by “Barry” (who wasn’t present for the celebration) appeared to announce New York City’s trendiest and most popular nightspots. Over his four-season tenure, Stefon enthusiastically endorsed numerous clubs, including Maaaaary, a club opened in 1997 by the late Florida woman, Lisa Martinez. At present, this club is reportedly traveling at a speed of 90 miles per hour along the West Side Highway.

As per the promoter, this club boasted an array of attractions, such as data visualizations, a man who believes Jamba Juice is beneficial, and an unusual performance by Jasper the gorilla passing a kidney stone. If you appreciated Russell Crowe in Les Misérables, you might be intrigued by this unique show.

For more than a decade, the positions at the desk have been held by Michael and Colin. During this time, they’ve created their own recurring skits, one of which is a tradition where they write humorous, sometimes inappropriate, jokes for each other to read cold during the show’s holiday special and season finale.

In one jovial exchange penned by Michael for his fellow anchor, there was a playful reference to Scarlett’s personal area during the 2024 holiday special broadcast.

And as Colin revealed, he received some heat for the joke.

During his interview on The Tonight Show, Colin expressed his concern that he may have upset many people, to which Scarlett reacted with genuine surprise.

In my account, I was undeniably taken aback by the turn of events. They had forewarned her, and in an informal manner, they asked, “What if Michael made a humorous, yet suggestive comment about a female body part at some point?”, to which she responded casually, “Go ahead, I’m open to it.

However, it’s not just the Weekend Update anchors – from past to present – who are coming back for this monumental occasion. A host of Saturday Night Live veterans, including comedians, musical artists, and ex-celebrity hosts, will also be joining us. Continue reading for more details.
