Colson Smith has shared that the dramatic departure of his Coronation Street character, Craig Tinker, provided a fitting farewell for him.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I found myself in an unsettling situation when I crossed paths with Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton). This fellow harbored a deep grudge against Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) and, unfortunately for me, I happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. His anger towards Kit spilled over onto me, resulting in a brutal attack that left me shaken.
Meanwhile, as Mick made a hasty exit and threatened Sarah Platt, Kit’s girlfriend (played by Tina O’Brien), Craig regained consciousness in the hospital.
In my recent viewing experience, I found myself moved when I spotted Kirk Sutherland, a man dear to young Craig’s heart and the one who thoughtfully gifted him a long-desired tie. Yet, as I watched the scene unfold, it was heart-wrenching to witness Craig’s health take a turn for the worse right then and there.
Medical professionals tirelessly attempted to resuscitate Craig, yet in the end, they pronounced him deceased. This somber moment was witnessed by a heartbroken Kirk, Maria Connor (played by Samia Longchambon), and paramedic Asha Alahan (portrayed by Tanisha Gorey).
As we struggle to come to terms with the tragic conclusion of Craig’s voyage, star Smith managed to lift our moods, expressing his delight about the way his departure was written.

As a seasoned movie critic who grew up within the very walls of this cinematic marvel since my tender youth of 12, I’ve come to know its intricate workings intimately. Thus, when the unfolding sequence unfolded before me, I was not only prepared but anticipating what was to transpire next. It was evident that our protagonist, Craig, had maneuvered himself into a corner so confining, it seemed nigh impossible for him to extricate himself from its grasp.
I had anticipated that our discussion with producer Kate Brooks would follow a similar pattern. During our chat with Kate, there were approximately 20 minutes where she was primarily doing the talking, yet we didn’t discuss specific details like when, how, who, or what.
According to Smith, he approached Kate and asked, “I need to know two things: first, when will this happen? Second, am I going to die?” At this, she paused momentarily and seemed a bit taken aback. He then added, “If it helps, the answer you should give me is Yes.
To leave, I wish I could simply cease to exist. I long for the door to close, so that in my mind, I can accept that Corrie was here, did that, and it’s all completed now. And with that, Craig’s voyage has concluded.
In a rather unusual sense, my demise seemed appropriate under the circumstances. The idea of potentially returning was not appealing because I knew it was highly improbable, and it would leave behind an incomplete narrative and a sense of unfulfilled obligations.
In my opinion, Craig’s passing, especially since he died while serving as a police officer – a heroic demise, truly made for an ideal ending to his story.
Additionally, he gave an assurance that fans should not anticipate his return as Craig in any flashback scenes or spirit sequences!
He chuckled and clarified, ‘I made it clear that I wouldn’t return as a spirit; when I go, I truly mean goodbye!’
While Craig’s demise was truly harrowing, Smith had a great experience filming these episodes.

I found it incredibly enjoyable. It was quite fortuitous as we typically collaborate with various directors at Corrie, but for this particular project, we worked with Duncan Foster who has an impressive track record of directing numerous significant productions spanning over three decades.
“It sounds like he claimed I was his forty-first victim! Yet, being around him gives an immediate sense of safety, and working with him feels extraordinary, as if we’re creating something truly unique.
On Thursday evening when I returned to work around 8 PM, it was quite pleasant outside. The warmth of the evening was noticeable, and they were aware of my arrival as I came in.
I spent some time outside The Rovers, on the street, likely for around an hour. I simply relaxed there, soaking up the atmosphere, bidding farewell and expressing gratitude towards Corrie and its impact on me. Afterward, I felt at peace, as if I had completed a chapter and was ready for whatever tomorrow may bring.
On his final day, Smith graciously shared the thoughtful, personalized presents he had prepared for each member of the Coronation Street cast and crew as a touching goodbye gesture.
Purchased mini Lego figurines of Craig Tinker for everyone. It’s a small Lego policeman with red hair, and I added a sticker saying ‘PC Tinker is always ready to help whenever needed.’ I’ll cherish our bond forever.
Without a doubt, the cobblestone streets will miss the distinct presence of PC Tinker, who was much like Craig in his role here.
