When asked about any hierarchy, McGovern tactfully replied, “Well, I wouldn’t call it a ‘pecking order’, but different segments do have their unique characteristics.”

Frequent listeners may not notice much of a difference: last year, she filled in for nine months while Barnett was on maternity leave. Her relaxed demeanor and ability to smoothly navigate between serious news and humorous segments were already quite familiar. “My background is a blend of American and international experiences,” she notes. “I’ve traveled with the BBC to over 30 countries, I’ve interviewed heads of government and refugees. I have the skill to locate and interview people at all levels within a story.”

Her time in New York was significant in multiple ways. Not only did it serve as the setting where she crossed paths with her husband Tristan Agates, who currently educates students on horticulture at the University of Greenwich, in the legendary CBGB nightclub; but it also marked a period when her work at NPR earned a Peabody Award for outstanding community-oriented radio broadcasts in 2008. She believes that radio provides a unique opportunity to touch people’s lives intimately and foster connections between communities. So, what kinds of communities would she aim to engage with through Woman’s Hour>?

1) “Recently, we visited Glastonbury and Lord’s. Nothing surprising there – the BBC often features these iconic institutions during summer broadcasts. To be honest, Lord’s Cricket Ground can come across as quite a male-dominated environment. However, we had the opportunity to interview the first female groundswoman, which was truly remarkable! Additionally, it’s our aim to explore locations less frequented by our listeners and create content for those who prefer to avoid the news. In essence, we’re striving to offer an escape from the norm, a space filled with positivity and enjoyment – something that can uplift people and provide a break from the constant barrage of negative news.”

According to McGovern, it’s essential to evaluate news from a feminist perspective, even if the content is positive or negative. This is because gender equality has not been achieved globally, and programs like Woman’s Hour serve as unique platforms for women of various viewpoints to discuss their thoughts and opinions.

I mention that the ascent of Kamala Harris may mean the election of the first female leader of the US. “We’re not there yet. There is progress, but it’s sort of two steps forward, one step back. Take healthcare, for example. The recent traumatic stories of women in maternity services [the UK’s first inquiry into birth trauma released its findings in May] were heartbreaking. This show traces what progress, if any, has been made. And our listeners tell us what is going on. The listeners, actually, are the joy of the job, they bring such experience and expertise to the airwaves.”

She doesn’t shy away from the currently charged area of female definition. “It’s a conversation to have on Woman’s Hour, and we have had it. During the election I hosted a debate between senior women from all seven of the main political parties. I asked them all to define what a woman is. I am paid to be impartial, but it’s an issue that needs to be thrashed out.”

“Just like certain parts of the digital realm, the internet serves as uncharted territory for many young women. Issues such as revenge porn, online harassment, and maintaining one’s online persona are prevalent concerns. My goal is to assist these young women in understanding and finding resolutions for these challenges.”

In her free time, she prefers activities tailored for women. For instance, she enjoys swimming at the Ladies’ Pond in Hampstead Heath because it offers a unique ambiance distinct from the mixed ponds. The sounds are more feminine, dominated by women’s voices. She also dreams of the day when the Thames might be cleaned for swimming, like the Seine in Paris, so she can enjoy a similar experience there.

Is there anything she has in mind to adjust to make the world more women-focused? One issue we frequently discuss is the lack of pockets in clothing, but let me bring up another concern: the height of seatbelts. They are too high for many women; they often hit my collarbone, to be precise.

Becoming a “Women’s Hour” host positions her amongst esteemed broadcasting figures, yet past hosts have warmly welcomed her. She praises Jane Garvey and Emma Barnett, stating that the camaraderie among women in this field is indeed genuine.
