Vampires and Werewolves

ComicBook Nation's The Pull List: DC vs Vampires: World War V and Werewolf by Night Bring the Horror

Although Halloween hasn’t arrived just yet, we can still delve into some spine-tingling tales from the comic book realm to pass the time. This week, that’s precisely what DC and Marvel have in store for us. DC unveils their latest installment in the DC vs. Vampires series titled World War V, while Marvel reintroduces Jack in Werewolf by Night. Interestingly, both comics are debut issues, but they play distinctive roles in the broader storylines.

In DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1, readers are swiftly brought up to speed on the delicate peace between humans and vampires, with Barbara Gordon presiding over the latter. However, there’s turmoil within the vampire ranks as Damian Wayne is assaulting his own kind, jeopardizing their dominion, though he’s not a champion of humanity either. The intricate power struggle among different groups is one of the aspects that makes this issue and the universe captivating. When an unexpected ice age arises, it disrupts old alliances and beliefs, forcing everyone to fight for survival, which adds to its appeal. Thus, World War V serves as a strong starting point, but I believe it offers much more reward if you’re already immersed in the world and its characters. It is accessible for new readers, but those who have followed along previously will find it richer.

That’s in contrast to Werewolf by Night, which feels like a complete onboarding for new fans and those who perhaps only know the character from the MCU’s special presentation. Jack Russell gets a big introduction for fans old and new, and so does his world and the supporting cast of characters that call this corner of the Marvel Universe home. The issue even works Blood Hunt into the mix and directly deals with the consequences right after, and though that is a bit awkward, it does help create an intriguing setup to build out from, especially with Elsa Bloodstone and The Hood in the mix. Those new to the character need look no further for a one-stop-shop to get on board.

From the Ashes and Absolute Power Check-In

As a long-time fan of comic books, I must say that diving into the latest releases from the X-Men’s From the Ashes era and DC’s Absolute Power event has been quite an exhilarating journey for me. This week, I found myself engrossed in two new books for each storyline, and though I had some reservations about the X-Men relaunch initially, both X-Men #2 and X-Factor #1 have definitely turned things around for me, and in a big way.

In the realm of Absolute Power, Task Force VII #4 appears to be an exception within the series. Although it’s decent, it lacks the depth or significance to the broader narrative that other issues have provided, despite Failsave continuing to be a captivating character. However, Green Lantern #14 stands as its polar opposite, offering not just importance for the event itself but also enriching the characters and universe that the series has consistently spotlighted. If you’re considering one tie-in this week, opt for Green Lantern.

This Week’s Comics:

  • DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1
  • Werewolf by Night #1
  • X-Factor #1
  • X-Men #2
  • Task Force VII #4
  • Green Lantern #14
  • Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special #1
  • Vengeance of the Moon Knight #8
  • Spider-Boy #10
