Composer’s Shock: Why Abby’s Casting in The Last of Us Left Everyone Confused!

Translating a video game into a movie is usually met with little appreciation, no matter the choices made, some part of the fanbase will complain. While negative feedback isn’t always negative, it can lead to improvements like the redesign of Sonic in his first live-action film. The initial reactions were severe, forcing Paramount Pictures to revise the design, leading to a more successful and enduring image for the hedgehog character, which has been maintained across three movies and a TV series. Unfortunately, this demonstrates that when big studios listen to the fans, it can sometimes open the floodgates for anyone to start an online campaign demanding changes.

In a surprising twist, HBO’s hit series The Last of Us is facing resistance from a groundswell of fans who are pushing for changes in the cast and crew. This movement has roots that stretch back to before the show’s premiere, with concerns about Bella Ramsey not resembling Ellie enough being voiced even before her performance was seen. Although this remains an issue for some viewers as Season 2 unfolds, much of the criticism has shifted towards Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays Abby.

People are suggesting that Dever’s physical appearance in real life differs from Abby’s character in “The Last of Us Part II” because, in the game, Abby is large and tall, offering players a distinct gaming experience compared to Ellie. Since viewers can’t control characters on the show, it makes sense that Abby wouldn’t have the same build as her video game counterpart.

Even though it’s a significant shift, it’s understandable if some people need time to get accustomed to the concept of Abby being portrayed differently. For instance, Jake Staley, one of the show’s composers, falls into this category due to his familiarity with the games. This gives him a unique perspective compared to someone diving into the live-action adaptation without prior knowledge.

During an interview on “The Last of Us Podcast: Savage Starlight”, Staley expressed his surprise regarding Bella Ramsey being cast for the role. He mentioned that since he’s familiar with the games to some extent, his initial thought was, “Alright, what’s behind these casting decisions?” The character of Abby, in particular, left him a bit puzzled, and he admitted that he might not be the only one feeling this way.

From a creative perspective on constructing a TV stand, he added, ‘I understand the concept, but at the same time, it’s strikingly unique. It’s not about judging its quality; rather, it provokes curiosity, making me ponder what our ultimate goal is in this endeavor.’

In the second season of The Last of Us, Abby hasn’t fully revealed her role yet since she’s only been in a few scenes. But, the third season will offer a fresh narrative, providing Bella Ramsey (Dever) ample opportunity to develop and embody the character.

Abby Will Have Plenty of Time to Shine in The Last of Us Season 3

In the gripping finale of The Last of Us Season 2, I find myself face-to-face with Ellie, with a heavy burden of revenge weighing upon me for the loss of Owen, Mel, and the entire Salt Lake crew. The tension escalates as I take Jesse’s life before aiming my gun at Ellie, discharging another bullet. But just when it seems all hope is lost, the screen fades to black, only to reveal a flashback to Ellie’s very first day in Seattle, hinting at Abby’s unique viewpoint of the unfolding events.

The series continues in a similar vein as part two, where the narrative centers around Abby following her emotional clash at the theater. Unlike before, Abby won’t be pursuing Ellie immediately; instead, she embarks on a personal journey that pushes her to her limits and causes her to question her role in Seattle’s conflict. Dever’s portrayal of Abby will include numerous intense scenes, demonstrating why she is undeniably the perfect actress for this character.

The Last of Us is streaming on HBO Max.
