As a movie buff with a keen eye for gripping narratives and a soft spot for political intrigue, I must say that Conclave seems like a captivating addition to my must-watch list. The stellar cast, led by the always mesmerizing Ralph Fiennes, promises an enthralling exploration of power struggles within the Catholic Church – a subject that has long fascinated me due to its complex dynamics and profound implications.
Recently, our Editor was exiled to the guest room by his wife due to a jest about the Pope, which he shouldn’t have made considering her strong Catholic faith. I reminded him of this fact, but he retorted with a laugh, “I know she is. I didn’t realize the Pope was!” Indeed, he can be quite the fool (though I wouldn’t dare say it to his face – ‘You’re fired!’ is more my style).
In a cloak of mystery and intrigue, an international assembly of Catholic contenders for the papacy gathers. Lawrence, a devoted and sincere figure, is tasked with ensuring the correct procedure for electing a new Pope is followed. His trusted confidant is Cardinal Bellini, a name that echoes Italy’s culinary delights amidst Cardinal Cappuccino, Cardinal Fettuccini, and Cardinal Mama Mia. A progressive thinker, Bellini advocates change but harbors no ambition for the Papacy. However, many other candidates aspire to lead the conclave.
Lawrence, filled with self-doubt and no longer believing in the church but still holding onto faith in God, finds himself surrounded by other clergy vying for the top position. This group, including the cunning manipulations of the cardinals, presents a challenge for Lawrence. Bellini cautions him, ‘Be wary of those who desire it most, for they can be the most dangerous.’ Fiennes delivers an outstanding performance in this role, and there is growing buzz about potential award nominations for his work.
Similar to many of Harris’ novels, this one leans towards a fast-paced, entertaining read. The blend of political intrigue and contemporary themes keeps readers hooked until the very end, though the unexpected twist may spark debate among audiences. Directed by Edward Berger, who demonstrated his skill with the remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” this film is incredibly engrossing and thoroughly satisfying.
