Concord Is PS5's First Flop of 2024

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the launch of Concord for PS5 and PC is akin to watching a hot air balloon deflate slowly but surely, right before our very eyes.

From the very moment Concord was unveiled for PS5 in May, I knew its journey to success was highly unlikely. Arriving years after the hero shooter trend had taken off and attempting to break into an already overcrowded market filled with established powerhouses, it seemed like an uphill battle from the start. The reveal trailer showcased uninspiring characters and cheesy dialogue that resembled a cheap Marvel knockoff, making its prospects even more grim. And unfortunately, those odds are proving true. Concord launched today on both PS5 and PC, but it’s not looking good for the game. At this point, unless there’s an unexpected miracle on the horizon, Concord is already as good as gone.

It’s clear that the game has only reached a maximum of 665 simultaneous players on Steam today, which is relatively low compared to another PS5-exclusive title launched this week, Black Myth: Wukong, that peaked at an astounding 2,415,714 concurrent users on the platform. Keep in mind that comparing it to one of the largest Steam launches ever might not be entirely fair.

Legacy of Thieves Collection’s concurrent players on Steam within the last 24 hours is like comparing apples to oranges. However, surprisingly, the number of people playing Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection at any given time recently has come close to the number who played Concord when it first came out. To put it into perspective, the highest number of concurrent players for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on Steam was 587 within the last 24 hours. This is a stark contrast.

In a different wording: It’s unfortunate for Concord that it not only fails to impress commercially but also critically. On Metacritic, it has a score of 69, which is quite low for a PlayStation game, especially considering it was in development for eight years. Additionally, when you compare it to the success of other PS5 games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Helldivers 2, and Stellar Blade this year, Concord’s poor performance stands out significantly.

Although some games have managed to transform challenging circumstances through additional updates after release, it seems rather improbable in this case. It’s plausible that this title might serve as Firewalk Studios’ debut and potentially their last project.
