Concord’s Director Has Reportedly Stepped Down Following the Game’s Shuttering

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say, the rollercoaster ride that is the gaming industry never ceases to amaze me. The saga of Concord, once hailed as the next big thing, has taken an unexpected turn, leaving many of us in shock and disbelief.

In just two weeks following its debut, despite tepid critical reviews, poor player turnout, and reportedly low sales, Sony declared that the online multiplayer game Concord would shut down. They also announced that everyone who had bought the hero shooter game would receive a refund.

Currently, a Kotaku report suggests that Ryan Ellis, previously the game director at Concord and creative director of Destiny 2 at Bungie until his departure in 2017, has transitioned from his leadership position. However, he continues to work with developer Firewalk Studios, now taking on a more supportive role.

The report further suggests that both the continuation of the game and the fate of the studio are uncertain at this point. Following the closure of Concord, it was disclosed that Firewalk and Sony were deliberating potential paths for the game’s future; however, according to three unnamed sources, Sony has yet to communicate anything about it, leaving Firewalk’s staff in the dark.

From my perspective as a dedicated fan, there’s been some buzz within the industry about staff departures and potential layoffs at the studio, along with rumors of a complete shutdown, although it’s crucial to stress that these are internal theories without any official confirmation. Despite this uncertainty, there’s a sense of apprehension among some team members regarding Concord’s future. The speculation is running high, with questions about whether the studio will move on to create something completely fresh or if they might collaborate as a co-development team on one of Sony’s ongoing first-party projects instead.

Last April, Sony (PlayStation) officially welcomed Firewalk Studios into their family of in-house development studios, having completed the acquisition.
