Confess, Fletch Director Has Bad News About Sequel

As a die-hard fan who has followed Fletch’s journey from page to screen, I must say, it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride! From the original Fletch to Confess, Fletch, and now Fletch’s Fortune, each step has been filled with anticipation, hope, and sometimes, disappointment.

The upcoming film Fletch’s Fortune, the sequel to Confess, Fletch by director Greg Mottola, has been canceled at Miramax. Mottola mentioned that recent changes in management at the studio have resulted in a decline of interest in the sequel. The movie, which cost approximately $20 million to produce, grossed less than $1 million at the box office. This was due to a simultaneous release on digital platforms and a swift transfer to Showtime and Paramount+. Despite its poor box office performance, it received great reviews and fans of Gregory McDonald’s sharp-witted investigative reporter have remained hopeful that its success on home video platforms could lead to a sequel. Unfortunately, Mottola had already begun writing the script for the follow-up.

In the initial film production, Bill Block, a dedicated supporter of Mottola’s vision, remained faithful to it. However, he is no longer associated with Miramax, the studio that owns the rights to the Fletch series. As per Mottola, the departure of Block was essentially the final blow for the movie.

As a passionate advocate for my sequel project, I was left disheartened when the new head of Miramax, who holds the rights to all the books, turned it down. I can’t help but feel the Fletch curse has struck again. In expressing my frustration on social media (via Dark Horizons), I shared that the gatekeepers don’t seem to grasp its potential, yet I gave it my all.

In the making of “Confess, Fletch,” director Mottola and lead actor Jon Hamm were deeply invested, with Hamm even returning a portion of his earnings to fund the film.

For Mottola, it appears he’s quite content with his ongoing role in penning the second season of the Peacemaker series created by James Gunn.

In a peculiar twist concerning rights, Gregory McDonald’s third “Fletch” novel, titled “Fletch’s Fortune“, isn’t encompassed within the package Miramax obtained for previous “Fletch” novels. The original “Fletch” novel remains outside of Miramax’s possession, with Universal likely retaining the rights due to a 1985 film adaptation they produced based on the original book. Regrettably, it wasn’t clarified by Mottola why this was the case, but it seems probable that Universal still holds those rights. Additionally, Miramax doesn’t own the rights for the “Flynn” spinoff series, leading to the replacement of the Fletch character with an original character (portrayed by Roy Wood, Jr.) in “Confess, Fletch“.

In the original “Fletch” film, there was a significant success, however, instead of basing a sequel on one of McDonald’s novels, Universal opted to create an entirely new story, only loosely related to the books. This second movie, titled “Fletch Lives”, did not fare well at the box office. It took quite some time for Hollywood to show interest in the franchise again. In the past, there have been two separate attempts to adapt the “Fletch” property into films – one by Kevin Smith, starring Jason Lee as Fletch, and another by Bill Lawrence, with Zach Braff in the role. Unfortunately, neither of these projects advanced beyond the development stage.
