Conjoined Twins Abby & Brittany Hensel Explain How They Share Anatomy

As I delve deeper into the fascinating lives of Abby and Brittany, I am truly awestruck by their remarkable resilience and unique bond. Their journey is not just about physical conjoinedness but a profound emotional and mental connection that defies the conventional understanding of individuality.

Their experiences, from sharing social media accounts to making joint decisions, reflect an extraordinary level of mutual understanding that most people can only dream of achieving. It’s as if they are two sides of the same coin, each complementing the other in a way that is both beautiful and enigmatic.

The challenges they face, such as privacy intrusions and health concerns, are not trivial matters but are handled with grace and determination that speaks volumes about their character. Their desire to start a family, expressed as far back as 2006, shows a maturity beyond their years and a strong will to live life on their own terms.

Their journey is not just about overcoming physical limitations but about embracing life’s complexities with humor and humility. For instance, imagine trying to explain to the doctor that you have two heads during a routine checkup! That alone deserves a good chuckle.

In essence, Abby and Brittany are more than just conjoined twins; they are a testament to the power of love, understanding, and resilience. Their story is not just about survival but about living life to the fullest, with all its ups and downs, joys and challenges. It’s a story that inspires us to embrace our differences, cherish our connections, and above all, laugh at ourselves once in a while!

Abby Hensel and Brittany Hensel aren’t keeping this information close to their chest.

Though the conjoined twins have been open about their intriguing personal experiences, such as Abby tying the knot with husband Josh Bowling in 2021, they’ve also chosen to inform the public on their unique bodily structure by releasing a recent video.

The video, produced by molecular biologist Hashem Al-Ghaili and posted on the Hensels’ TikTok account on Dec. 30, highlights that Abby and Brittany Hensel possess an extraordinary physique featuring both shared and separate systems. Specifically, they each have their unique upper body systems, meaning they have two heads, two brains, two spinal cords, and two hearts, albeit with a combined circulatory system.

Despite sharing a single circulatory system, these 34-year-old sisters (who are among the oldest conjoined twins with parasitic dicephalia) have separate functional systems for their brains and spinal cords.

In this setup, it’s because Abby takes charge of the right arm and leg, while Brittany handles the corresponding counterparts on the left.

As a die-hard admirer, I must say, even though they’re divided, their actions are incredibly synchronized. In situations that necessitate the use of both arms, like gripping items, tapping keys on a keyboard, or maneuvering a vehicle, it’s all about unwavering collaboration and communication between them.

Indeed, the main focus in the twins’ show, titled Abby & Brittany, was the exploration of their lives, particularly during their teenage years and even driving experiences. This was more than a decade past.

In 2012, Abby clarified on TLC that we, in fact, possess two driving licenses. When we obtained these licenses, each of us had to undergo a test. Fortunately, we both managed to pass.

As for how they go about the task?

As Brittany pointed out, when it comes to driving, Abby manages both the accelerator and the brakes while we both take turns controlling the steering wheel.

The TikTok video further clarified that Abby and Brittany each possess four lungs, two separate but partially fused, two stomachs, two gallbladders, three kidneys (combined into one functional unit), a single liver, a divided small intestine and large intestine, a shared pelvis, a unified bladder, and a set of reproductive organs.

Because each twin has a distinct stomach, they process their food individually. This applies not only to how they consume food but also to any discomfort or pain they might experience in those organs.

In the show, Abby simply said, “If you’re experiencing a tummy ache, like this,” she touched Brittany’s abdomen, “I can’t sense any sensation in return.

“I can only feel my right side,” Abby added, as Brittany chimed in, “I can only feel my left side.”

Besides sharing news about their reality show and personal milestones such as Abby’s wedding and the twins starting their teaching careers in fifth grade, they have consistently demonstrated an unwavering spirit, showing no signs of slowing down.

Even though they have distinct bodily structures,” the video speaker summarized, “Abby and Brittany have overcome the odds by leading vibrant, active lives through teamwork and exceptional synchronization. Their tale continues to serve as proof of the adaptability of the human body and the indomitable spirit within us.

Abby and Brittany were both born on March 7, 1990. Their mother, Patty Hensel, revealed in a 2007 documentary titled “Extraordinary People: The Twins Who Share a Body,” that she had initially been led to believe she was carrying only one baby due to scans. Upon birth, the twins were found to have three arms, but one of them was non-functional and later removed.

Patty and her husband, Mike Hensel, learned that Abby and Brittany had always been inseparable since infancy. Although Patty suggested that they might have grown apart as they grew older, the parents opted to keep them joined because they could lead a complete and healthy life together as conjoined twins.

In a 2007 documentary, Abby and Brittany expressed that they are grateful for not being separated since it allows them to engage in activities like playing softball, meeting new people, and running together.

In a 2007 documentary, Abby and Brittany shared that they frequently predict what the other will write in an email or online message while working together. They often refer to themselves as a single entity, using the term “we,” but when they have differing opinions, they make sure to distinguish who is speaking by saying “Abby speaks” or “Brittany speaks.

They also now share singular social media accounts, which are private and mostly inactive.

Abby and Brittany have often shared that they comprehend the interest in their lives. However, they acknowledged experiencing annoyance when faced with reactions like unauthorized photography from strangers in public places.

In 2007, Abby made it clear that she dislikes it intensely when others snap photos of her, and she becomes quite upset about it, causing the photographer to feel awkward.

Moreover, as doctors showed an interest in monitoring their development and health during childhood, Mike and Patty Hensel opted against subjecting their daughters, Brittany and Abby, to any unnecessary medical examinations. These siblings found the doctor’s office to be their least preferred destination at that time.

In 2007, Dr. Joy Westerdahl clarified that although they are distinct, the family aims to regard them as ordinary individuals. She acknowledged the family’s preference for minimal intervention in their care.

Following her wedding with nurse and veteran Josh Bowling on November 13, 2021, Abby welcomed another loved one into her life – his 8-year-old daughter Isabella. Although the news came as a surprise to many, both Abby and Brittany had long harbored dreams of starting a family together.

In the year 2006, during ‘Joined for Life: Abby & Brittany Turn 16’, Brittany expressed, “Absolutely, we plan to become mothers,” but added that they hadn’t given much thought as of yet about how motherhood would fit into their lives.

In their mid-thirties, Abby and Brittany have consistently guarded their personal lives since the show “Abby & Brittany” premiered in 2012. This one-season reality program showcased their journey as they completed college and transitioned into adult life.

After graduating from college, Abby and Brittany started their teaching careers. Upon being employed, they disclosed that they weren’t on a salary, instead receiving individual contracts, which meant they divided their earnings.

They currently teach fifth grade together at an elementary school in Minnesota.

On an episode of Abby & Brittany, Abby clarified, “I excel in math and science. As for Brittany, her passion lies more in literature and reading-related areas.
