Following a prolonged run that surpassed all predictions, “The Conners” concluded poignantly on ABC last night, wrapping up in a two-part series finale filled with clips from the original show, noticeably excluding Roseanne. As a sequel to the iconic sitcom that originated in the late 1980s and reigned supreme throughout the 90s, “The Conners” carried on without the participation of Roseanne Barr. The absence was addressed by portraying her character as having succumbed to an opioid overdose.
Throughout the final season of The Conners, though she was frequently referenced, she didn’t show up in any flashbacks. The grand finale drew on scenes from the original series involving Dan, Jackie, Darlene, and Becky, but it omitted the matriarch who had passed away. Despite her absence, the finale heavily focused on her character. In the end, Dan and the family secured a fitting $700 settlement check following their lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company responsible for producing the drugs that led to her demise, which served as justice for her death.
Bruce Helford, the executive producer, expressed to USA Today that many fans would have appreciated Roseanne’s presence. He explained, “Although she isn’t present physically, we felt it was important to pay tribute to something she created and cherished. We aimed to respect her memory in our portrayal. The viewers adored her and her family.” Regarding the $700 check mentioned in the show, Helford stated they wanted to depict an accurate representation of court proceedings, and added, “This reflects what truly happens in the legal system.
The focus is on family strength, demonstrating that wealth doesn’t guarantee happiness. True contentment stems from the bond within the group.
Fans React to Roseanne’s Absence in ‘The Conners’ Series Finale
Despite the fact that ABC had valid reasons for dismissing Barr in 2018 due to her offensive social media posts, some viewers wished that she would be given a bit more leniency in the final episode of The Conners, with perhaps a few glimpses of her character. Given that the show wouldn’t be around without her, this was a request many had. However, this did not occur, and fans swiftly took to social media to express their disappointment. “I know Roseanne is problematic, but there should have been some reference to her at the end of #TheConners,” @MikeyNXS tweeted on X. @classicTV2123 chimed in: “A small nod to Roseanne would have been nice.
In my opinion, it would have been a more fitting decision to include Roseanne in the final episode of “The Conners.” Regardless of personal feelings or opinions, she was undeniably the heart and soul of the show. Excluding her entirely from the finale feels disregardful, given that she played such an integral role in creating the success of the series.
User @mzcaramelbunni commented, “It seems they made the best effort they could, I suppose,” followed by: “Perhaps she opted out of appearing due to her connection with the show. However, it was an ideal moment for depicting Dan and Roseanne’s fake wrestling scene concluding with a kiss.” On another note, @TimOnTheRadio expressed his surprise, stating, “I truly expected them to bring Roseanne back as a ghost or something similar.
Despite the absence of Sara Gilbert (Barr) from the final episode of The Conners, many people felt that the way the show ended after seven seasons was appropriate. Although she wasn’t physically present, they honored her in a small but meaningful manner. Similarly, D.J., played by Michael Fishman, was missing from the finale as he left after Season 4, causing less buzz among viewers. If you missed it when it aired, you can now watch the series finale of The Conners on Hulu.
