As a fan who grew up watching Keanu Reeves bring John Constantine to life on the silver screen, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for a potential sequel. The first movie was a dark, gritty take on the character that resonated with many, despite its box office performance.
Although the 2009 film “Constantine” didn’t initially garner significant financial or critical success, it has since developed a dedicated fanbase. At this point, Warner Bros. Discovery and DC are actively developing a sequel, with Keanu Reeves set to reprise his role as the title character. However, details about the storyline remain unclear. The original “Constantine” featured Shia LaBeouf as Chas, Peter Stormare as Lucifer, Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, Rachel Weisz as Isabel Dodson (who was Constantine’s love interest), and Stormare has expressed interest in returning for a sequel, although this was before the sequel was officially confirmed.
Lately, it’s been disclosed that one of the producers has finished a draft for the sequel’s script. In a playful manner, he admitted to being “nervous” about reading it. With the first film drawing from various elements of excellent Hellblazer comics, some fans are curious which comics might be influencing the upcoming version.
Given that John Constantine has joined the wider DC Universe, it opens up the possibility for numerous comics to influence the sequel, though it appears unlikely this will occur. This is due to an upcoming live-action DC Universe on the big screen and hastily pairing him with Justice League Dark might undermine the purpose of making a follow-up to the Reeves film. However, there’s a relationship aspect from post-New 52 Constantine that could effortlessly be incorporated into the movie: his connection with Zatanna.
Zatanna is another DC character who has faced several unsuccessful attempts at adaptation in Hollywood throughout the years. There have been whispers about her getting her own film and numerous speculations concerning her involvement in the Justice League and Justice League Dark projects as well. If a second Constantine movie materializes without Rachel Weisz’s character, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to envision casting a Zatanna character who could potentially fill a similar role in a potential sequel to the one Weisz portrayed in the original film.
In both the “Constantine” TV show and John’s tales within “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” his past band experiences and mischiefs were quite significant. Given that the initial film explored the repercussions of John’s poor choices as a smoker transitioning into middle age, it’s plausible that a sequel could delve into the Mucous Membrane phase – Keanu Reeves could even perform music in real life! – and John’s most regrettable action, unintentionally condemning Astra Logue (the daughter of his friends) to Hell. This event haunts John throughout his life (even if, in “Legends,” he had an opportunity to somewhat rectify it). Crafting a narrative around dealing with the aftermath of this incident presents an intriguing storyline, and while it was recently used for conflict on “Legends,” it seems like something a film could reinterpret in a unique manner.
One tantalizing idea would be to include a version of the “Hard Time” story from Hellblazer in the movie. In it, John is stuck in an American prison, and working on a secret plan that only comes together toward the end for the audience. The story was one of the first tales by Brian Azzarello, the first-ever American writer to tackle Constantine on an ongoing basis, and its darkness and brutality made up for the lack of traditional supervillains and trenchcoats. Of course, the lack of John’s customary wardrobe in a movie is likely never going to happen, since there are really only so many opportunities to see him suited up on the big screen.
A captivating tale worth developing into a solo film is the story penned by Jamie Delano titled “The Family Man,” where a serial killer and Constantine intersect. This narrative offers ample opportunities for intriguing character development or you can opt for a more conventional approach and craft an entirely new movie based on the concept.
