Controversy Pushed This Manga Series to Top the Charts in 2024

As an avid reader and follower of manga culture for over two decades now, I must say that the controversy surrounding “Drama Queen” is both intriguing and disheartening at the same time. The series has certainly captured the public’s attention, but not for the reasons one would hope for in a new release.

In any given series, debates tend to draw unwanted criticism but they also spark public intrigue about the plot. This was precisely the case with Shonen Jump+’s new series, Drama Queen, which debuted in December 2024. Predictably, it wasn’t for positive reasons that it generated a lot of attention. However, the controversy swirling around Drama Queen propelled it to become the most popular new series serialized in 2024, as reported on the official Manga Plus website.

Every year-end, I eagerly await the rankings unveiled by Manga Plus, the global authority for Shonen Jump manga! These rankings are determined by the number of views each chapter garners within the initial seven days following its release – specifically for series that have been translated into English. In 2024, Manga Plus introduced a whopping 57 English-language series, and among them all, “Drama Queen” has stolen the show! Since its debut, it’s been a hot topic on the Manga Plus app, generating over 1.5k comments – with many expressing their thoughts about the story’s captivating themes.

What is the Controversy Surrounding Drama Queen?

The popular manga series titled “Drama Queen” is facing accusations of racism due to its alleged anti-immigrant undertones. The narrative unfolds in Japan, nine years after extraterrestrials rescued Earth from impending doom and settled there. Now numbering 17 million, these aliens are revered as “saviors” among humans. However, a disgruntled factory worker named Nomamoto perceives the aliens’ behavior differently. She finds them arrogant and believes they view humans with contempt.

In a twist of events, our protagonist, a woman named Nomamoto, encounters an individual known as Kitami, whose kin were brutally taken by extraterrestrial beings. Sharing a mutual animosity towards these aliens, they soon form a bond. However, their lives spiral out of control when Kitami inadvertently slays an alien, and Nomamoto lends a helping hand to shield him from the consequences. The narrative takes a grim turn from the onset as we witness Nomamoto and Kitami preparing and consuming the alien, reminiscent of squid, a favorite delicacy in their culture. Nomamoto even notes that the scent of the burning aliens resembles that of squid.

In the interpretation of some readers, the portrayal of aliens within this story is seen as symbolic for immigrants or foreigners, leading to debates on possible themes of racism or xenophobia. However, other readers counter that this interpretation may be misguided, proposing instead that the aliens are merely a narrative tool and not meant to represent immigrants. Furthermore, one scene at the outset has stirred up controversy due to claims it is derogatory towards LGBT+ couples who use gender-neutral terms for their partners.

In a different rendition: Nomamoto clashes with an extraterrestrial and requests an apology. Yet, the female human beside him claims him as his companion in an attempt to settle the dispute. Subsequently, Nomamoto expresses her distaste towards alien beings, using the term “partner” to refer to their relationships. This was met with disapproval from readers, who perceived the author’s portrayal as a subtle critique of inclusive LGBTQ+ language. However, the manga remains silent on the issue, but alters Nomamoto’s statement to “I dislike women who use affectionate terms for their partners.

The manga made its first appearance on December 1st, and at present, there are four instalments available. However, the debate surrounding it continues unabated, as some viewers claim that its anti-immigration messages become increasingly prominent with each new release.
