Copilot+ PCs’ first must-have feature is just around the corner

In a forthcoming update, Copilot+ PCs will address one of Windows 11’s less robust aspects. This update incorporates an enhanced Windows Search feature that leverages artificial intelligence and specialized hardware to streamline the process of locating files, images, and settings.

Enhanced Windows Search functionality is only available on Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon processors at the moment. However, Copilot+ PCs powered by AMD and Intel processors will have access to this feature in the near future, as promised by Microsoft.

It’s unfortunate that the enhanced Windows Search feature is only available on devices powered by Snapdragon, leaving out many high-performing PCs with Intel or AMD processors from enjoying this improvement.

Back in October, Microsoft introduced an upgrade for the Windows Search, which allows users to search for content or settings using more detailed language within the search bar.

Enhanced Windows Search takes advantage of Neural Processing Units (NPUs) embedded in every Copilot+ computer. These CPUs boast a minimum processing power of 40 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS), indicating that they are well-equipped to manage AI-related tasks efficiently.

Since June, Copilot+ PCs have been available for purchase, however, unlike anticipated, there hasn’t been a standout, unique feature that sets devices bearing the Copilot+ PC label apart. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, described the Copilot+ PC launch as a “complete fiasco.

The catastrophic debut was due to multiple reasons, among which the absence of standout attributes played a significant role.

The introduction of unique, desirable features in the Copilot+ PC environment might significantly alter its current landscape. Many find Windows Search lacking, but boosting it with AI technology may alleviate some users’ frustrations with this tool.

The latest Microsoft update details an improvement where AI will make it easier to find content using Windows Search and File Explorer, essentially boosting search capabilities.

Windows 11 Build 26100.3624: Features & Improvements

When will improved Windows Search ship to Windows 11?

The enhanced Windows Search functionality is currently being tested by Windows Insiders within the Release Preview Channel. However, it’s essential to note that this test is only applicable to high-end PCs powered by Qualcomm processors labeled as Copilot+. This development is a promising indication for the feature, but remember that plans can always be adjusted as necessary.

As a researcher, I recently came across an announcement from Microsoft back in November about an enhanced Windows Search function. At that time, they mentioned that this new feature would be accessible through the Windows Insider Program starting early 2025. However, their statement did not provide a specific date for its general availability.

As an analyst, I can share that features introduced in the Release Preview Channel usually become available to all users within a span of 4-6 weeks, but it’s not always set in stone. Regarding the enhanced Windows Search, while we don’t have an exact release date yet, rest assured that it will be arriving soon.

On April 4, 2025, Microsoft plans to host an event highlighting artificial intelligence (AI) from a consumer perspective, marking their 50th anniversary. This occasion offers a prime opportunity for them to unveil enhanced AI functionalities, like advancements in the Windows Search tool.
