Coronation Street confirms Martin Platt return as Sean Wilson reprises the role

As a long-time Coronation Street fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia as I read about Martin Platt’s upcoming return to the show. Sean Wilson’s portrayal of the character during his original run from 1985 to 2005 was truly memorable, and I remember fondly how he helped raise Sarah and Nick, supported the family through difficult times, and even broke Gail’s heart with his infidelity.

Martin Platt is preparing to come back to Coronation Street once more before his ex-wife Gail Rodwell (Helen Worth) leaves the show, with Sean Wilson set to reprise his iconic character.

Six years have passed since the last time Martin, played by Jack P Shepherd’s father, was in Weatherfield following David’s 2018 visit.

David thought about relocating to New Zealand, where his father was planning to begin anew, all while keeping his rape experience concealed.

In the end, David decided to remain there, but Martin and his family, including partner Robyn and their kids, made the decision to depart and leave the country.

Upon Martin’s unexpected return, David is taken aback to discover him in their home, and wonders what could have prompted him to come back. Once Martin explains his reason for returning, how will the rest of the family respond?

Wilson begins filming today (Wednesday 24th July), and his return will air in October.

The actor expressed joy over being asked back to “Coro Street” for helping shape Helen’s departure narrative.

In the coming months, we’ll get the opportunity to reconnect with Martin and Gail as the narrative progresses.

“Since the beginning, playing Martin has brought me great pleasure. And somehow, returning will feel like stepping back into familiar territory – an unsettling prospect for the Platt clan, I’m sure.”

“Reuniting with my TV family is as cozy and familiar as putting on a well-loved sweater from the closet – I’m eagerly anticipating it.”

Sean initially portrayed Martin from 1985 to 2005. During this period, he played a significant role in raising stepchildren Sarah (Tina O’Brien) and Nick (Adam Rickitt, Ben Price). He stood by the family when Sarah unexpectedly became pregnant at 13, and later caused heartbreak for Gail with his infidelity.

What brings Martin home, and just how will he fit into Gail’s departure?
