William Roache has agreed to a fresh deal with Coronation Street, ensuring his continued portrayal of long-standing character, Ken Barlow.
For the foreseeable future, the veteran actor, who holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-serving cast member on any television show and has been a mainstay of ITV soap for 92 years, intends to remain faithful to his origins.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share the news: Just like Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell, I’ve signed on for another year of soapy adventures! The Mirror reveals that William Roache has joined us in this commitment to our beloved soap opera.
The paper quotes Roache’s previous comments about staying with the soap until the age of 100.
He mentioned to me, ‘Bill, with you being in the Guinness World Records, having an MBE, and playing a character on Coronation Street for more than six decades, it seems like there’s not much left to achieve, right?’
I told him that my goal is to become the first actor who’s still playing a role in a long-running soap opera when I turn 100. In other words, I want to be 100 years old and still acting on ‘Coronation Street.’ As long as they want me and I can keep doing it, I plan to continue working.
Since the very first episode of this soap opera aired back in 1960, I’ve had the privilege of embodying the character of Ken Barlow. Over these years, I’ve chosen to stay with this show as it continues to evolve and captivate audiences.
The report states that Ken continues to work on the soap, despite being under the care of Cassie Plummer (played by Claire Sweeney), a caregiver who has been secretly dosing him with medication since last year, unbeknownst to him.
Although the news about Ken’s future is exciting for fans, it’s important to note that there have been numerous cast alterations happening at the ITV soap.
In a recent development, it’s been disclosed that Colson Smith is no longer playing the character PC Craig Tinker, and Charlotte Jordan has decided to part ways with her role as the beloved barmaid Daisy Midgeley.
Currently, Sue Cleaver, known for her character Eileen Grimshaw, recently announced her departure from the soap following nearly 25 years. This comes shortly after Helen Worth, who played Gail Rodwell, left the show around the holiday season.
As part of Eileen’s exit, Katy Cavanagh will reprise her role as Eileen’s half-sister Julie Carp.
This week, Maureen Lipman exited the soap series, with her character Evelyn Plummer set to return periodically at Maureen Lipman’s discretion. Meanwhile, Luca Toolan has been removed from his role as Mason Radcliffe, a troubled teen whose storyline ended in a tragic knife crime incident.
Ultimately, after several years on the show, actress Sue Devaney (who portrays Debbie Webster) is being scripted out as her character undergoes a long-term storyline about dementia, which will continue until 2026.
