As a long-time Corrie fan, I have to admit that tonight’s episode was a rollercoaster of emotions! The revelation about Betsy Swain’s (Sydney Martin) involvement in Joel Deering’s (Calum Lill) crimes has left me stunned.
Tonight on Coronation Street (September 18, 2024), it was unveiled that Sydney Martin’s character, Betsy Swain, had an unexpected and troubling connection to the wrongdoings of Calum Lill’s character, Joel Deering.
With Betsy’s detective mother Lisa Swain (played by Vicky Myers) determined to apprehend predator Joel, she and Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) were optimistic for a resolution when one of Joel’s victims, Ellie Benton (portrayed by Lola Blue), stepped forward to speak out about the abuse.
In the hospital, Lauren Bolton (played by Cait Fitton) kept Max Turner (portrayed by Paddy Bever) informed about her condition while they both looked after her baby boy Frankie (conceived by Joel). Eventually, Max managed to convince Lauren to have a meal with him at the café.
As chaos ensued following a phone call from the hospital indicating that Frankie had experienced a seizure, Betsy shared her deep secret with her friend Sabrina Adetiba (Luana Santos), expressing remorse for something she had done wrong. Sabrina encouraged Betsy to reveal the truth to her mother.
At the same time, Lisa spotted the Bistro delivery vehicle and shared with Dee-Dee that perhaps the dashcam could assist them in identifying the person who delivered the drugs Joel tried to use to harm Frankie even before his birth.
In this scenario, here’s a possible way to rephrase it: The plan worked out, so Lisa summoned Joel again for interrogation. She let him know that Frankie seemed seriously unwell, which might be due to the drugs he had laced on Lauren.
Should the infant perish, Lisa noted, Joel might face a potential murder accusation. However, Joel maintained his innocence and was shortly released from the police station.
Joel made his way to the hospital again, this time leveling accusations at Lauren for using illegal drugs to terminate her pregnancy. A nurse then instructed Joel to leave.
A little while later, when Betsy was attempting to converse with Lisa, their conversation was cut short by Max, who disclosed Joel’s recent actions. At this point, it became clear to Betsy that Frankie was critically ill.
Betsy ran off, and her secret was revealed to viewers when she told Sabrina she didn’t know that Joel would use the drugs on Lauren, and now Frankie could die.
Torn by remorse, Betsy eventually found herself visiting Lauren and Frankie. Inquiring about their newborn, Betsy casually brought up a conversation with Max, which sparked curiosity in Lauren as to who Betsy was. However, Betsy hastily left the room before any questions could be answered.
Will Betsy confess, finally sealing Joel’s downfall?
