Coronation Street villain Joel panics as he uncovers Betsy’s true identity

As a long-time Corrie fan, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns, but tonight’s episode took the cake! Joel Deering (Calum Lill) has always been a character to watch, and tonight was no exception. His secret drugging of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) led to a premature birth and a fight for little Francis’ life.

In tonight’s Coronation Street (August 5, 2024), Joel Deering (Calum Lill) experienced an unexpected and unfavorable jolt. His shady actions toward teenager Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) led him to feel remorseful about his questionable behavior.

After Lauren Bolton (played by Cait Fitton) delivered Joel’s son prematurely, she became extremely anxious because the newborn was struggling due to Joel’s hidden choice to medicate her without her knowledge.

Simultaneously, Joel maintained a friendly demeanor towards his unaware fiancee Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown), but the strain was evident. Dee-Dee proposed a visit to see Lauren, while Betsy reminded Joel of the debt he owed her.

In the hospital, Joel moved cautiously until Lauren inquired about his intentions. He requested Lauren to erase an incriminating email she had planned regarding Joel, assuring her that if she complied, he would take responsibility for both her and their child’s well-being.

In an attempt to assert herself against Joel, Lauren found herself overpowered by her feelings and suggested a meeting with him instead, introducing him to her little boy. Alone in the nursery, Joel gazed into his son’s incubator, and for the first time, displayed regret by softly whispering “sorry” to his child.

Upon my return, I found myself drawn towards Joel, who, with time, managed to earn my trust. A heartwarming moment arose when I shared that I’d named our newborn Francis, in honor of my grandfather. This revelation struck a chord with Joel, as he too had chosen the same name for his own grandfather. The emotion on his face was palpable and poignant, underscoring an unexpected connection between us.

In our discussion, we decided to call our little one Frankie, short for Franklin. However, just as we were discussing this, dear Dee-Dee popped in, interrupting us. To avoid any confusion, I had to feign a conversation about reaching out to a women’s charity for assistance with Lauren.

Later on, Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) learned about Lauren’s predicament and went to speak with her. Lisa urgently requested that Lauren consent to a DNA test, as it would confirm that Chris Harper is indeed Frankie’s father.

Given that it turned out differently, Lauren held her ground, but Lisa felt encouraged when Joel proposed to convince Lauren.

Somewhere else, Betsy confided in Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan) that she had information on a criminal that could be used for blackmail. If she made a single mistake, she’d expose the fact that her mom is a police officer.

However, after Betsy was caught shoplifting by Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain), Lisa grew angry and told her daughter to return to the car. Meanwhile, Joel, who was nearby, was taken aback upon hearing the confrontation.

Could Betsy revealing secrets to her mother potentially uncover Joel’s crimes, or is it possible that Lisa might stumble upon the evidence on her own?
