Coronation Street’s Jack P Shepherd asked bosses to change final scene with Helen Worth

As a long-time Coronation Street fan with memories as deep as the cobbles themselves, I can hardly contain my emotions as Helen Worth, the legendary Gail Platt, prepares to bid adieu after 50 years! The thought of Christmas without Gail feels almost sacrilegious, but knowing it’ll be a “classic Corrie with a bit of a twist” has me intrigued.

Following an incredible 50-year run, it’s time for the character played by Helen Worth, Gail Platt, to leave Coronation Street in a way that promises to be nothing short of remarkable.

Although specifics about her departure are being concealed, what’s certain is that it will occur on Christmas Day. Producer Kate Brooks has verified this, indicating that the holiday episode will embody the essence of classic Coronation Street but with an unexpected spin.

One character named David might find it especially challenging when his mother departs from Weatherfield. The soap has hinted at the possibility that he may encounter additional sorrow during the upcoming holiday season.

Initially, Jack P Shepherd made a splash on screens as the charming David Platt in the year 2000, and ever since then, he’s been associated with the soap opera for a period of 24 years. Interestingly, when it came to filming his final scene for Worth, there was only one specific demand he made.

Instead of going, “No, no, her last scene has to be just all of us, with all the Platts,” Shepherd emphasized that it had to be their final scene ever filmed. Since the writers hadn’t included a part where they were all together, he requested them to do so!

He said of what he told them: “Just write one, you can!”

The shepherd continued: “Indeed, they did compose one, and I responded, ‘There’s no need for us to engage in any activity, let’s simply ensure we’re all gathered in the Platts, if you will, for heaven’s sake, for when she eventually departs. Let’s not leave her with a stranger or anything like that.’

“So they did that, and luckily, they were able to do it and schedule it.”

It was a powerful moment on set too, with “every unit” on the studio asking to break and say goodbye to Worth.
