In tonight’s intense episode of Coronation Street, airing on the 6th of January 2025, the character Mason Radcliffe, portrayed by Luca Toolan, tragically met his end following a brutal stabbing at the hands of his older brothers Matty (Harry Lowbridge) and Logan (Seamus McGoff).
Lately, the teenager who was once a bully had been making positive changes in his life, but unfortunately, a series of unfortunate incidents brought him to a halt, right when he was preparing to begin anew in Germany.
Additionally, you have the option to watch Corrie’s individual conversation with Toolan, along with her costars Liam McCheyne (Dylan Wilson) and Sydney Martin (Betsy Swain), in a separate interview.
In 2024, with Mason, the main antagonist in the heart-wrenching bullying narrative, being at the center of the plot, it was unexpected when his character embarked on a journey towards redemption. The fact that he meets his end only adds to the surprise and shock felt by fans.
In this instance, the performer expresses his gratitude for being given the responsibility to portray a crucial tale on the subject of knife violence, and he elaborates on his satisfaction in showcasing the more compassionate aspects of his character, Mason.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I’d like to share an interesting tidbit: my last-filmed scene was remarkably different from the intense finale we witnessed with Mason on-screen. It was more tranquil than the dramatic climax that left us all breathless!
As you recover from tonight’s upsetting episode, you can read the full interview below.
How did you feel when you found out Mason would be killed in the stabbing storyline?
Initially, upon learning the news, I felt a blend of feelings – a sense of sadness over Mason’s passing and the prospect of my departure, yet equally, I was thrilled and humbled to be involved in this narrative. This is a matter of great significance that demands attention, making it a truly honorable role to play.
It’s been an immense honor for me to kick-start my professional journey at Coronation Street. The experience has been absolutely fantastic.
How long have you known that this was going to be the outcome for Mason?
I discovered somewhere between February and March, so I had been waiting for quite some time. This delay allowed me to delve deeply into the plot details, an experience that turned out to be very rewarding.
How important do you think a storyline like this is?
As I mentioned earlier, I must admit that I had significantly underestimated the impact of Coronation Street. Its influence on viewers is profound, particularly when they’ve experienced situations comparable to those portrayed in the show.
As a passionate movie-goer, I truly felt the impact when I found myself immersed in a storyline about bullying. Witnessing the response firsthand made me realize how crucial it is for movies and soaps to tackle such topics. After all, if this narrative manages to prevent just one person from resorting to violence, then its mission has been accomplished magnificently.
Mason’s death is really going to affect the whole community. As an actor, how does this feel?
It’s quite moving when characters you’ve admired throughout your life will be affected by your character’s demise. Initially, Mason was a rather solitary figure who didn’t interact much with others due to not being fully integrated into the street as a cast member. However, he has found his place within the street now, and it feels great knowing that I’ve made an impact.
How was it filming the stabbing scenes?
Filming it was both tiring and fantastic. My concentration was at its peak, and as an actor, such a captivating narrative is exactly what I yearn for. I adore those long workdays, pushing myself to the limit, and even shooting scenes in the freezing cold.
Each morning, I’d leap out of bed, brimming with excitement to start my day at work. My entire team was incredibly nurturing, fostering a setting where one could easily tap into the right emotional mindset and perform with ease. Filming those scenes was truly a memorable experience.
Have we lately shown a more compassionate aspect of Mason? Did it bring pleasure to you, knowing the audience witnessed this kinder side of him?
Absolutely! It would be unfortunate if he maintained the same demeanor as when he arrived. Recently, Mason has shown a lot of kindness, particularly towards Betsy, which has been refreshing. It’s delightful to witness this change in him and understand that he’s not just a character, but a genuine human being.
This contributes significantly to emphasizing the seriousness of his passing. It also serves to share his story and increase understanding about the harmful impact of knife violence on all those affected.
What was your last ever scene?
It’s amusing since we shot scenes out of sequence, meaning the last line I delivered was a brief dialogue with Tim regarding dessert, specifically sticky toffee pudding. However, it didn’t feel like my grand finale as the conversation seemed quite low-key compared to what I expected for my very last scene.
Originally, I had hoped to wrap up work at Corrie and grab a bite at Nando’s with my buddy Liam [McCheyne], but he wasn’t getting back to me. On what turned out to be my last day, I couldn’t help but think, ‘C’mon pal, you’re not even responding while I’m saying goodbye!’ But when I completed my tasks, Kate Brooks [producer] and Liam, along with Sydney [Martin], suddenly appeared to surprise me. It was a heartwarming moment as it made me feel truly valued.
I really wanted to have lunch with Liam before leaving Corrie, but he didn’t respond. On my last day, I wished he would reply, and when I finished work, they surprised me! Kate Brooks, Liam, and Sydney came down to greet me, and it felt great knowing they cared.
What’s been your favourite memory of Coronation Street?
Wow, there are numerous memorable moments! Picking one is tough, but if I had to choose, it would be my very first day on set. Although I didn’t have any lines, I was working alongside Liam and Charlie [Wrenshall]. Being on that set for the first time was an incredible feeling, and I believe that thrill will stay with me forever.
Is there anything of Mason’s that you would want to take with you?
As a devoted admirer, I couldn’t help but feel drawn towards that distinctive purple or maroon bag of Mason’s – it’s been such an integral part of every scene he’s been in. In fact, I find myself pondering if I should covertly grab it when we’re on set next time, as I apparently left it behind during our last session.
Will you be watching Mason’s final episode with anyone?
To tell the truth, I’m not certain if I’d enjoy watching that show personally. In fact, I usually don’t care for watching myself alongside others. Frankly, I’m unsure if I’d feel comfortable doing so in this case. However, Seamus, who portrays my on-screen brother, is a good friend of mine, and there have been discussions about our families gathering to watch it together, which sounds quite appealing.
What does the future look like for Luca?
I have a deep passion for acting, and I’m eager to keep pursuing it. I’ve gained so much knowledge and am incredibly thankful to everyone associated with Corrie. Regarding my future, I’m unsure of what lies ahead, but I often quote: ‘Shooting for the stars; if I miss, I’ll land on the moon.’
