Coronation Street’s Paul dies in heartbreaking scenes – but Billy’s too late to say goodbye

As a seasoned viewer of soap operas, I have witnessed my fair share of heartbreaking moments, but tonight’s Coronation Street left me utterly speechless. The poignant portrayal of Paul Foreman’s (Peter Ash) final days was a powerful and moving tribute to those battling motor neurone disease.

This article includes description of terminal illness and death that some readers may find upsetting.

In a poignant turn of events on Coronation Street, airing on the 9th of September 2024, Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), took his last breaths. Tragically, Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) was not present to witness Paul’s final moments, as he was overcome with grief.

After spending his life tending to Paul, who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in April 2023, Billy was convinced to take a brief respite. He ended up joining David Platt (played by Jack P Shepherd) and Todd Grimshaw (portrayed by Gareth Pierce) for drinks at the Chariot Square hotel.

The day following, a groggy Billy found himself being playfully teased by his adopted daughter, Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), upon realizing he had misplaced his phone, holding precious moments with Paul within it.

During the summer season, Bernice Winter, who’s Paul’s mother, stepped in to care for him. Meanwhile, Billy bid farewell as he journeyed back on his own path. Exhausted, Billy and David ultimately reunited at the hotel and later discovered Billy’s damaged phone. They then decided to buy a new one from a nearby store.

However, at the apartment, Paul was gasping for air, and when Bernie understood that Paul might not survive the day, she sent her younger son, Kit Green (portrayed by Jacob Roberts), to search for Billy. Since they couldn’t reach Billy any other way, this was their only option.

Summer phoned for an ambulance, yet it was a 15-minute wait until it arrived. During this time, amidst the anticipation, Paul was able to say Billy’s name – a longing to be reunited with his spouse.

Bernie pleaded with trainee paramedic Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) and her partner to make every effort to sustain Paul’s life during their journey to the hospital, understanding that every moment counted.

Kit located Billy and shared the troubling update regarding Paul. However, heavy traffic prevented them from leaving, causing Billy to flee on foot.

The medical professional shared with Paul’s family that he had multiple blood clots in his lungs and his heart function was deteriorating.

Gemma Winter-Brown, also known as Dolly-Rose Campbell, arrived at Bernie and Summer’s side where Bernie lay, to bid a final farewell. They were able to get through to Billy over the phone.

As Paul’s friends were setting the phone next to him and Billy was about to talk, Paul, in a poignant moment, took his final deep breath. Meanwhile, Bernie, Gemma, and Summer understood that Paul had sadly passed away.

However, Bernie chose not to reveal this fact to Billy, enabling him to express his love for Paul. Meanwhile, Billy remained under the impression that Paul was alive and could eventually learn about Bernie’s feelings.

After much delay, Billy arrived at the hospital, coinciding with a doctor announcing Paul’s demise. Overwhelmed, Billy wept at Paul’s lifeless body.

This signified the conclusion of a deeply emotional and impactful depiction of Motor Neuron Disease, as actor Ash concluded his six-year tenure in the role.
