Since their debut in Fantastic Four #1 back in 1961, this extraordinary team – Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing – has battled larger-than-life monsters on numerous occasions. One of their earliest foes was the Mole Man, whose subterranean army from Monster Isle they confronted. They’ve also crossed paths with Godzilla, the King of Monsters, more than once: first in Marvel’s Godzilla #20 and later in issues #23-24, joining forces with the Avengers to protect New York City from Toho’s iconic movie monster in the ’70s.
About half a century after their initial encounter, Marvel’s First Family and the legendary Godzilla come together once more in the inaugural issue of a series of six standalone comics, each exploring distinct periods in both the Godzilla and Marvel Comics universes.
Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 – A Clash of Legends
Written by Ryan North, known for his work on One World Under Doom, and John Romita Jr., famous for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man, this comic book brings together the rich histories of Marvel and Toho. The story unfolds following the events of the 1954 movie, Gojira, and the 1966 issue #50 of Fantastic Four.
The narrative starts where the original Godzilla film ended, with Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, played by Akihiko Hirata, using his Oxygen Destroyer to vanquish Godzilla at the expense of his own life.
The Coming of Godzilla
After failing to halt Godzilla’s rampage in Tokyo, the Fantastic Four return home to discover that the beast has emerged near New York’s Liberty Island. Attempting to fight back, the Four unleash their powers, but Godzilla remains undeterred by the Human Torch’s fireballs, the Invisible Girl’s force field assaults, and a beating from the Thing. However, Mr. Fantastic manages to knock out the monster with a powerful punch to its mouth after extending his fist.
Godzilla strikes back, using his destructive atomic breath that would have wiped out the Fantastic Four if Invisible Woman hadn’t protected them with a protective energy barrier. Once Godzilla touches ground, the team devises a strategy: Mr. Fantastic plans to connect New York State’s power grid to their Baxter Building residence, transforming it into an electrical trap for the monster.
1. The Fantastic Four transform the Baxter Building into a channel that topples Godzilla, causing both the building and the monster to collapse. With the skies growing dark and ominous, the team begins to fear the reemergence of Galactus, the cosmic entity known for consuming planets. Earlier, Galactus had lost his herald, the Silver Surfer, who was a silver-skinned guardian of the universe. However, after betraying his master and being trapped on Earth by a cosmic obstacle, the Silver Surfer is no longer at Galactus’s service.
2. The Fantastic Four convert the Baxter Building into a conduit that defeats Godzilla, causing both the building and the beast to tumble down. With the sky becoming increasingly ominous, the team becomes suspicious of the return of Galactus, an entity that consumes planets. Earlier, Galactus lost his herald, the Silver Surfer, a silver-skinned guardian of the universe. However, after rebelling against his master and being trapped on Earth by a cosmic barrier, the Silver Surfer is no longer at Galactus’s beck and call.
3. The Fantastic Four make the Baxter Building into a means that brings down Godzilla, resulting in both the monster and the building collapsing. As the heavens grow darker, the team starts to worry about the resurfacing of Galactus, an entity known for devouring planets. Earlier, Galactus lost his herald, the Silver Surfer, a silver-skinned protector of the cosmos. However, after defying his master and being trapped on Earth by a cosmic boundary, the Silver Surfer is no longer under Galactus’s control.
4. The Fantastic Four alter the Baxter Building into a tool that knocks out Godzilla, leading to both the building and the monster falling. With the clouds darkening overhead, the team begins to suspect the return of Galactus, an entity that consumes planets. Earlier, Galactus lost his herald, the Silver Surfer, who was a silver-skinned sentinel of the cosmos. However, after disobeying his master and being confined on Earth by a cosmic obstacle, the Silver Surfer is no longer serving Galactus.
Instead of Galactus, it’s King Ghidorah who descends upon Earth. Acting as a new emissary for Galactus, King Ghidorah has been dispatched to destroy the planet so that its ruling entity can feed on it without encountering resistance. Even the Power Cosmic of the Silver Surfer is no longer powerful enough against King Ghidorah. However, if the Silver Surfer were to transfer his cosmic powers to Godzilla, this mighty beast could potentially overcome Galactus’ three-headed envoy.
Later on, the Silver Surfer transfers the remaining Power Cosmic to Godzilla, sacrificing his own strength in the process and transforming the monster into a new form: Cosmic Godzilla (a subtle nod to the movies “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, directed by Matt Shakman).
Cosmic Godzilla
Observing from afar, I witness the radiant aura of cosmic might emanating from the colossal figure known as Godzilla. With a breath that could level entire city blocks, imbued with his atomic cosmic power, he unleashes it against the indomitable King Ghidorah. Yet, Ghidorah remains undeterred, standing tall amidst the chaos. In a desperate move, Sue steps forward with an innovative idea – instead of making Godzilla vanish, she proposes bending light itself around the formidable creature known as the Thing, enlarging it to Titan-scale as a diversionary tactic.
King Ghidorah clashes with the Thing’s enormous light structure, while Godzilla merges his heat beam and the Power Cosmic into a formidable weapon capable of destroying gods. He deploys all his strength against King Ghidorah, causing the Power Cosmic to be expelled from the monstrous creature, which subsequently departs from Galactus’ control and flies away into space. As the Silver Surfer transforms back into Norrin Radd from Zenn-Lavos, Godzilla restores the Power Cosmic to the Silver Surfer and returns to his aquatic habitat.
However, Reed Richards surmises that this might just be the beginning. Given our past experiences, it seems a titanic showdown between Godzilla and Galactus is imminent. If such an event unfolds, one must wonder if any of us could possibly endure it?
