At the tail end of January 2025, the main filming for the DC Universe movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” officially commenced, with Milly Alcock portraying the lead superheroine. As the second full-length movie in the DC Universe, this production remains enveloped in a veil of secrecy, although it has been confirmed that Jason Momoa’s character, Lobo, will make his debut in this feature. This is an exciting development for Supergirl, especially considering the numerous setbacks in bringing a standalone film for her character to life within the now-defunct DC Extended Universe. For the first time since the 1980s, Supergirl is on track to lead her own theatrical movie. With so much still unknown about “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow“, fans’ imaginations are running wild as they ponder who else might be involved in this project.
Drawing from numerous Supergirl comics over the years, there’s a vast array of adversaries this Kryptonian vigilante might face on the silver screen. Interestingly, it seems that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which appears to draw heavily from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2021-22 comic miniseries, could hint at the appearance of an unusual character from Supergirl’s inner circle. Just as James Gunn’s Superman has Krypto, might the DC Universe’s Supergirl be joined by Comet, her super-powered steed?
Who on Earth Is Comet the Super-Horse?
In the year 1962, the character of Comet first appeared in Adventure Comics issue #293, symbolizing the wildly imaginative spirit that defined the Silver Age of comics. Essentially, Comet used to be a centaur who, ironically, was transformed into a horse by the sorceress Circe through a spell meant to complete his human transformation. After Circe imbued him with extraordinary powers, Comet eventually crossed paths with Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl.
In this tale, Comet, acting as Supergirl’s powerful companion, harbored deep romantic feelings for her. As Comet proclaimed in an old comic panel from the 1960s, “If I were human and able to express my true emotions, for a girl like that, I’d surrender all my powers!” For a brief period, Comet transformed into a human named Bronco Bill Starr and shared a transient romance with Supergirl. In a significant transformation, the modernized version of Comet made his debut in Supergirl #14 from 1997 as a rugged centaur, devoid of the earlier character’s more playful qualities and embracing a grittier, “realistic” persona instead.
To put it simply, the comic miniseries titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has given new life to the character Comet, who was previously overlooked. In this storyline, Comet plays a significant role, even giving up his own life to save Supergirl, the main character. Though not widely recognized like some other characters, Comet appears to have had an essential part in Supergirl’s comic book history, including the story that the upcoming “Woman of Tomorrow” movie is drawing inspiration from. Given James Gunn’s affinity for animal superheroes (as seen in Krypto, Rocket Raccoon, and King Shark), there’s a possibility that Comet might make an appearance in the DC Universe’s inaugural Supergirl film.
Comet Could Seriously Appear in Woman of Tomorrow
In March 2024, James Gunn posted several images from Superman comics on Instagram that served as inspiration for his upcoming 2025 Superman film. One of these images showcased the entire Silver Age Super-Family, featuring Comet on the left side. While this doesn’t guarantee Comet’s appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it does indicate that Gunn has taken notice of Comet and is well-versed in Kryptonian-related lore. Given that DC Studios head James Gunn is focusing on a movie based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow miniseries and is aware of Comet at this time, it’s reasonable to speculate that Comet could make an appearance in this film.
It’s worth noting that the upcoming comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is likely set entirely in outer space, which allows director Craig Gillespie and team to delve deeper into the most unusual aspects of DC Comics. On Earth, a super-powered horse like Comet might seem too unrealistic to include. But in the vastness of space, there’s no reason not to make use of Supergirl’s trusty steed!
A strong indication that Comet might show up in the DC Universe could be found in the series “Creature Commandos”. In this show, one of the villains is Circe, who played a significant role in transforming Comet into a horse. Circe, voiced by Anya Chalotra in “Commandos”, has a richer history with DC Comics than just her link to Comet. The fact that Circe and Supergirl’s big DC Universe entrance are happening close together is quite intriguing. With the introduction of Circe in the DC Universe and Comet’s prominent role in the “Woman of Tomorrow” comics, it seems like all the pieces for Comet to make his live-action debut in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” are falling into place.
Right now, you can stream “Creature Commandos” on Max, and “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” will be playing in theaters starting June 26, 2026.
