Could [SPOILER] come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the theories and clues

As a long-time Critical Role fan who has followed Vox Machina’s journey since its humble beginnings, I must say that this latest development in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is nothing short of exhilarating! Pike’s character growth and newfound blood magic abilities are truly a sight to behold. It’s fascinating to witness how the show is taking elements from the original campaign and weaving its own unique narrative, offering fresh perspectives while remaining true to the spirit of the source material.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 episodes 7, 8, and 9, along with equivalent events in the Critical Role campaign.

In the seventh episode of The Legend of Vox Machina’s third season, streaming on Prime Video, we witnessed what is undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching scene in the series: the demise of beloved character Percy de Rolo.

Following Percival’s heartbreaking last moments, the group’s survivors and fans alike are still in shock, as they watched his funeral unfold and Vox Machina faced the Chroma Conclave without him. This has sparked a lot of discussion about whether or not and how this character might return from the dead.

Unlike many other fantasy series that employ impactful character deaths, The Legend of Vox Machina’s universe offers multiple methods for resurrection. However, there are specific rules and limitations associated with each method.

Regardless of the departures the show “Critical Role” has taken from its initial storyline, upon revisiting the episodes and delving deeper into the perspectives shared by the Vox Machina fanbase, we’ve uncovered some intriguing hints.

Could Percy come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the clues and theories

The absence of the Matron of Ravens

Could [SPOILER] come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the theories and clues

In the third season of Legend of Vox Machina, there seems to be a strong indication that Percy might come back to life, for in this instance, the Matron of Ravens doesn’t seem to be guiding his spirit during the transition from life to death – a duty she typically fulfills.

In episode 9, it might not occur to you until then, but when Thordak, the dragon, slays Kashaw Vesh in a massive battle, it’s significant. After bravely attempting to defeat the leader of the Chroma Conclave, Kashaw is tragically crushed. His spirit, however, appears over his lifeless body, visible only to Vax, being the Matron of Raven’s Champion among their group.

Upon the Matron’s emergence before Kash’s spirit, he swiftly approaches her, eventually succumbing completely, thereby making it clear that his death is irreversible and final.

In episode 7, we didn’t observe any indication of Percy’s presence or her soul for that matter, to Vax. Although it might be suggested that she was seen from a different angle than the specific scene in the show since Vax wasn’t there initially, Vax didn’t exhibit any response even when he later arrived on the scene, suggesting he didn’t notice any trace of Percy or the Matron’s presence.

From this, it’s reasonable to infer that Percy’s spirit may still reside on the mortal plane, possibly in a minimal form insufficient for his resurrection. Yet, another hint suggests a potential location of his soul.

Orthax may have taken Percy’s soul

Could [SPOILER] come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the theories and clues

Anna Ripley formed an alliance with Orthax primarily to borrow its power and manufacture a soldier’s quantity of Pepperbox weapons. In return, she would offer up for consumption by the demon the souls of any individuals killed by these weapons, including her own if necessary.

Following Ripley firing a concealed smaller gun at Percy, just before his final utterance of “Vex…”, the scene shifts to a close-up of Percy and Anna’s primary firearm, which begins to radiate light. Any weapon affected by Orthax’s power, such as the other Pepperboxes in the factory and Percy’s from season 1, also emit light. As Ripley grabs the larger Pepperbox, Orthax’s spectral, dark figure envelops the image of Percy, eventually obscuring the screen.

Initially, it might seem like a subtly ominous transition leading us to the scene where Vex and company reach the ruined factory. Alternatively, this juncture could symbolize Orthax taking possession of Percy’s spirit, transferring it into Anna’s Pepperbox instead.

Although Ripley’s smaller weapon apparently took Percy’s life, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe that Orthax, who currently possesses Ripley, could claim a soul using any suitable vessel – in this case, Ripley acting as the conduit.

When Pike, Vex, Keyleth, Grog, and Vax arrived later, they didn’t see any indication that Percy’s spirit had passed to the Matron because it was transported somewhere else instead.

The potential of Pike’s new powers

Could [SPOILER] come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the theories and clues

As Percy battled Ripley within the factory, we simultaneously witnessed the impact of Pike’s character evolution, demonstrated by her employing her newly acquired blood magic skills to prevent the others from experiencing hallucinations. Interestingly, these powers proved far more potent than the Everlight abilities, which seemed to be faltering for her.

Originating from Zerxus Ilerez encouraging her to have faith in herself over the Everlight, the power of blood magic appears significantly stronger, swiftly curing others affected by the hallucinogenic gas with just a gentle touch.

This suggests a slight correlation with the Critical Role lore concerning blood magic, where it’s mentioned that blood wizards gain more from healing magic, but this enhancement appears to be exclusive to them and not their allies. Therefore, Pike’s new abilities in the Vox Machina show seem unique and without any known precedent.

So far, we haven’t fully witnessed her true capabilities. The power of her healing, aided by the Everlight, has only been utilized to help those who are still alive; unfortunately, it doesn’t have any effect on those who have already passed away.

It’s yet unclear if the fresh blood magic will grant her sufficient power to wield necromancer skills as a cleric. However, we certainly look forward to witnessing how this development unfolds.

The big difference from the Critical Role campaign

Warning: This section contains big spoilers from similar events in the Critical Role campaign.

Could [SPOILER] come back from the dead in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3? All the theories and clues

The final big clue we’ve found for Percy getting revived in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3, is the fact it happened in the equivalent section of the Critical Role campaign. Percy dies not once but twice: Ripley first kills him to be brought back to life by a necklace Pike gave to him, then is slain once again by Ripley after Orthax gets the drop on him.

As a movie buff, let me tell you this: Not only was Percy’s resurrection swift, but it was flawless too. Following the demise of Ripley at the hands of our Vox Machina comrades, they transported his body to the temple of Sarenrae, nestled in Whitestone, for the revival process.

Working together like a well-oiled machine, I was proudly part of the team that saw Pike, Keyleth, and Vax perform an extraordinary resurrection ritual. Their united efforts resulted in the miraculous return of our beloved friend, Percy, back among us once more.

However, we’re hesitant about this theory due to the fact that in episode 8, they brought Percy’s body back to Whitestone for burial, which made his death seem quite definitive then.

Although there are other indications suggesting otherwise, it’s possible that the series is taking another detour from the Critical Role campaign, leading to the same outcome but over an extended period. Delaying Percy’s revival for several episodes or even a whole season would create a more significant impact when translated to television.

In case they eventually discover that Percy’s spirit remains among the living, wrongfully taken by Orthax, embarking on a challenging journey to liberate and potentially revive him promises a much more rewarding experience.

As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share that the epic saga of Vox Machina is now available for streaming on Prime Video! If you haven’t tried Amazon Prime Video yet, you can enjoy a 30-day free trial and dive right into this fantastic series.
