Last week, Sony’s gaming platform, PlayStation, aired a State of Play livestream, showcasing various smaller games destined for both PS4 and PS5. Post the broadcast, Jeff Grubb discussed the event on an episode of Game Mess Decides. During this discussion, Grubb hinted at Sony’s upcoming event, which is speculated to occur this summer. As per Grubb, there has been some internal deliberation regarding the format of the next livestream – whether it should be another State of Play, or a comprehensive PlayStation Showcase. At present, a definitive choice hasn’t been made, so the scale of the event remains uncertain.
As a fan, I can sense an internal deliberation – they’re weighing the possibility of a summer extravaganza as a full-blown Showcase, or perhaps another State of Play event, but it seems like a Showcase is on the table. If that’s the case, get ready for a trove of exciting content! And if there’s a Showcase, you can bet your boots that Wolverine will make an appearance, along with several other games potentially launching next year.
Grubb is generally trustworthy, though it’s best to keep hopes in check until Sony makes an official announcement. If they decide to hold a summer Showcase, it could provide the perfect stage for Sony to reveal titles like “Marvel’s Wolverine.” This Insomniac-developed game was initially announced around four years back, but since then, there have been few updates. Regrettably, a ransomware attack on the developers in 2023 led to the leak of various aspects of the game online, including early gameplay footage, story elements, and character designs. It’s not the best way to preview a work-in-progress, but hopefully, we’ll get an official update soon.
After Grubb’s remarks, members of the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit started debating whether a PlayStation Showcase might reveal details about a Venom spin-off game. Online leaks from a recent ransomware attack suggested the possibility of a Venom solo game, which many fans speculate would be a smaller title like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales in scale. Sony has not yet confirmed the game’s existence, leading some to question if it was secretly canceled or if it’s actually in development.
In the podcast discussion, Grubb touched upon the present situation of Sony’s exclusive game offerings for PlayStation. Fans have expressed disappointment due to the scarcity of first-party games in the PS5 generation, and Grubb mentioned that these games are still in a peculiar state. However, he believes that a summer PlayStation Showcase could serve as a platform for the company to establish some 2026 expectations, potentially making it a significant year. For now, whether or not this event transpires is uncertain, but let’s hope PlayStation enthusiasts receive more exciting prospects soon.
