Courtney Stodden Details Sobriety Journey After Giving Up Alcohol

Courtney Stodden is embracing a sober lifestyle.

A previous contestant on the British version of Celebrity Big Brother publicly announced their choice to abstain from alcohol, expressing their personal struggles with substance use in an open and honest manner.

On July 15th, Courtney posted on Instagram that she’s ending things with alcohol. It’s been a harmful relationship for quite some time now. Initially, she turned to it as a way to deal, to flee, to endure. But in reality, it has caused her more harm than good – in public and private settings.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d like to share a personal observation: Yesterday was indeed my final day of indulging in alcohol, as I chose to mark it with a special note.

Courtney asserted, “I’m breaking free from its grip now. I’m tired of the sickness and shame it brings. I yearn to live fully, authentically in my life. I want to confront my past, my wounds, and my present circumstances with unclouded vision and genuine resilience.

On the third day of her quest for sobriety, Courtney – known for making news when she married Doug Hutchison at age 16 back in 2011 – posted an update claiming that the actor had taught her how to drink prior to their divorce in 2020.

In the video posted on July 17, Courtney stated, “He consumed endless bottles of alcohol, and mistreated me. This led me to start drinking as well, learning the habit from my mentor.

Previously, the reality TV personality had been using alcohol as a means to mask uncomfortable feelings. However, they are now committed to maintaining their new lifestyle change.

“I never want to end up out of control,” they shared. “I won’t let that happen to me.”

TopMob News has reached out to Doug’s rep for comment but has not heard back.

After parting ways with the cast of “The Green Mile”, Courtney was in a relationship with Chris Sheng from 2021 to 2023. However, she later got married to TV producer Jared Safier in a surprise ceremony held in Palm Springs in December, attended by only 20 people.

Following their departure from “The Green Mile”, Courtney had been engaged to Chris Sheng between 2021 and 2023. But instead, she ended up marrying TV producer Jared Safier in a small Palm Springs ceremony with just 20 guests present in December of that year.

In response to inquiries made by Us Weekly, Courtney shared that they had initially not set a wedding date. Upon looking into each other’s eyes, she expressed, “We both share the same level of insanity.” They then felt an overwhelming sense of readiness and exclaimed, “This is the ideal moment to tie the knot!

Courtney mentioned that the impromptu festivity came together perfectly as they, along with Jared who’s 41 years old, discovered that both their families were planning to visit during the Thanksgiving vacation.

As someone who has always embraced my free-spirited nature, I’ve come to realize that this essential aspect of me is unlikely to change even with the upcoming marriage. Consequently, when everything aligned perfectly, it felt like the perfect moment to make this decision.

He went on to say, “Following some ups and downs, I’ve successfully completed a year without alcohol. This achievement makes me incredibly proud. If you’re battling the same struggle, remember that support is available. There’s no need for embarrassment. Together, we can overcome this.

Later in life, he looked back on his battle against addiction and the great efforts he made to conceal his fight from others.

He mentioned during an episode of his wife Jenny Mollen’s ‘All the Fails’ podcast in March 2024, that he was attending therapy and focusing on various issues. However, after a productive therapy session, he decided to leave therapy and went to a liquor store instead. There, he bought a fifth of vodka, consumed it, and then drove home. His intention was to get drunk enough to detach from his current state, avoiding any connection that might stir up emotions.

He mentioned, “I had everything planned perfectly. I made sure not to drink so much that I couldn’t talk to you. In fact, I kept refilling the bottles at the bar regularly.

On a 2025 episode of the Question Everything with Danielle Robay podcast, she confessed to becoming heavily dependent on Adderall and abusing it excessively. She admitted to using it constantly, often skipping sleep for days at a time. She described her behavior as reckless, fearing she might have a heart attack. In the March 4th episode of Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast, Jax confessed that he struggles with addiction, particularly to cocaine. Admitting it is difficult for him, as he finds it challenging to express out loud.

He’s had periods of struggling with it, starting when he was 23, and now, at 45, he finds himself in the same situation. There have been stretches where he managed to avoid it, but other times he found himself immersed in it deeply.

Jax decided to stop drinking as well as using cocaine, stating, “I don’t believe I have a severe alcohol problem, but they often go together. I can’t use cocaine without also drinking. Therefore, I chose to quit both substances. I am happy to share that I’ve been sober for 82 to 83 days now, which is the longest stretch in my life without either.

Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man: No Way Home’s lead character, gave up alcohol in 2022 as he felt like it had become a sort of mastery over him. On the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, he admitted to being addicted to alcohol and stated that anyone drinking beer daily likely has an issue with it.

Then, the actor added, “You’d find yourself at that point thinking, ‘I wish I hadn’t had that final drink last night,’ only to discover upon waking up the next morning that you have a throbbing headache.

After adopting the new lifestyle, Holland observed that he has been experiencing improved sleep quality and a more effective approach towards handling issues.

He said, “Previously, when problems arose on the set, they used to upset me. But now, I can handle them with ease. My mental state has improved significantly. I feel more robust and healthy.

In a more casual manner, you could say: The main character from the movie “Hunt for Red October” seldom discusses his long-standing struggle with sobriety, a battle he’s been waging for nearly four decades.

He mentioned that he doesn’t frequently delve into this topic but occasionally does so when it seems appropriate. He has been sober for 39 years now, since February 23, 1985.

Discussing his life following his relocation from New York City to Los Angeles in 1983, Alec described his struggles by saying, “For two years, I faced an intense, daily challenge. I believe I inhaled a line of cocaine that stretched as far as Saturn. We brought it back home with us. Essentially, cocaine was like coffee during that era – everyone was using it constantly throughout the day.

And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.

Today, he relies on the city around him.

He expressed that New York brings him peace. Each time he strolls around, he discovers new aspects of the city he hadn’t noticed before. A simple glance at a building might reveal details he had overlooked before, like those unique doors. He also spends time having meals and coffee with friends.

Back in April 2024, the actress who played the Princess in The Princess Diaries announced that it’s been over five years since she last had a drink. In an interview with The New York Times, she expressed that this achievement feels significant to her, saying, “This seems like a notable landmark for me.

Her thinking was straightforward. She confided, “I instinctively knew it wasn’t right for me,” and added, “It felt excessively harsh to have to say ‘Absolutely not,’ but none. If you’re sensitive or react severely to something, you don’t debate the issue. So I stopped debating.

She expressed contentment about the choice she had made, adding, “I’ve found things are significantly improved for me.” She went on to explain, “For myself, it served as a catalyst for growth rather than a place of dwelling.” In other words, she doesn’t enjoy lingering in negative circumstances.

At the 2018 Woman of the Year ceremony held by the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a home dedicated to helping women overcome addiction issues with substances and alcohol, Moore shared insights into the self-damaging trajectory that came close to halting her professional journey.

In simpler terms, the individual shared that they experienced pivotal moments in their life which significantly influenced who they became and the course they took. Early on in their career, they found themselves moving towards self-destruction despite any achievements. Regardless of their successes, they always felt inadequate. They had little regard for their own worth, leading them to a critical juncture where it wasn’t clear why things were happening. Reflecting on this period, they suggested it might have been some form of divine guidance.

In 2012, Moore acknowledged gratitude towards two individuals who were not well-acquainted with her for presenting a sort of ultimatum that encouraged her to alter her lifestyle. Essentially, they said something along the lines of “if you’re still alive, you need to appear” (or words to that effect). She was also offered a chance to change the trajectory of her life and prevent self-destruction before it was too late.

Moore remarked, “They noticed aspects of me that I wasn’t aware of myself. I am deeply thankful for this, as it was their belief in me that enabled me to be here today, where I stand.

Cyrus revealed in 2022 that she has been recovering from her Xanax addiction since 2020. As she shared with Rolling Stone, the medication provided structure during a time when she desperately needed it, as she didn’t want to be idly dwelling on her thoughts. She also mentioned that it brought her hope.

The performer remarked, “When I sensed that you could momentarily mute the world and dull your suffering, that was the end of it.

She mentioned that her friends at one point implicitly supported her drug habits, which led to a deep, seemingly endless spiral of darkness for her. However, during the pandemic, Cyrus acknowledged facing difficulties and admitted she wasn’t emotionally engaged. “I would frequently nod off and fall asleep,” she reminisced. “And I couldn’t keep my head up or maintain my eyelids open because I was so deeply entrenched in it.

She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”

For 16 years, the former star of Parenthood had maintained sobriety until a motorcycle accident in 2020 led to a relapse, where they resorted to using Vicodin.

For the past two months or so, he mentioned during his “Armchair Expert” podcast, “I’ve been using them quite a bit, and I can do so since I have a prescription. However, I also take additional medication to supplement my prescription.

Day by day, I find myself more entangled, my obsession growing stronger. Lying to those around me has become second nature, yet the truth echoes within me, demanding change. I know I must break free, but my tolerance spikes so rapidly that I’m now consuming eight 30mg pills daily, a quantity I fear will lead to a harsh withdrawal. The fear grips me tightly, and loneliness creeps in. It’s as if I carry an enormous secret, a burden too heavy to bear.

In the year 2018, I openly shared my struggle with a decade-long addiction to opiates that started in the late ’80s following minor cosmetic surgery for my inherited puffy eyes. This prescriptive solution significantly altered my life trajectory. “For ten years, I found myself stealing and scheming,” I confessed to People magazine. “Nobody was aware. Nobody knew.

In the sweltering summer of 1998, when my sister graced our home with her visit and carried a supply of prescribed painkillers for her rib injury, I reached my lowest ebb. Hiding in the guest room closet where her suitcase resided, I found myself helplessly drawn to those opiates. As she prepared to depart, I knew the pills would be conspicuously absent upon her return to packing. Unable to evade the truth any longer, I penned a heartfelt confession and left it on her suitcase. Upon my return home that day, she enveloped me in a warm embrace, whispering words of love, worry, and determination not to stand by as I self-destructed.

On February 3, 1999, she went to her initial gathering, the same day she confided in her filmmaker spouse Christopher Guest about her struggle. He was astounded that he hadn’t seen it before, and she has been sober ever since.

In 2021, Barrymore announced a significant achievement in her recovery journey. On the show CBS Mornings, she shared that it had been over two and a half years since her last drink of alcohol. She explained that abstaining from alcohol was no longer beneficial for her.

She stated, ‘It’s quite amusing. When we expose who we are, our secrets, and what we’ve tirelessly labored for, it feels incredibly freeing and exposed simultaneously.’

Later on, Barrymore clarified to the Los Angeles Times that she refrains from using the term “sober” as she doesn’t wish to be perceived as a flawless, puritanical figure.

In 2023, she reflected, “I had been telling myself, ‘I’ll get a handle on this. I’ll find a solution.’ But then it dawned on me: ‘I haven’t mastered this yet, and I probably never will.’

In the throes of the 2000s, I, as a person who has walked the red carpet and faced the limelight, grappled with an addiction to cocaine. However, it was my friend, Will Arnett, who bravely intervened, confronting me about my actions when they became a concern.

During an interview on the Smartless podcast in 2022, Cooper vividly remembered that moment as the first time he became aware of his struggle with substance abuse, an experience he would never forget.

Acknowledging Arnett as the catalyst, Cooper stated, “He bravely engaged in a challenging discussion with me, which led me to contemplate and ultimately make the choice to alter my lifestyle.

In September 2023, the former star of Cruel Intentions announced on Instagram that this was the longest period he had been sober since his teenage years, without any form of nicotine or marijuana (along with other substances) in his system.

He also mentioned that he’s grateful for the liberation he experiences from leaving behind addictions and reliance on substances. For him, being sober brings a sense of clarity, a strong connection with his spirit, and it truly feels wonderful.

In 2018, during her tour, the singer proudly marked six years without alcohol. However, later in the same year, she shocked her fans by releasing the heartfelt song “Sober,” admitting that she had experienced a relapse.

In a simpler and more conversational manner: “Mama, I apologize for losing control again. Daddy, please forgive me for the mess on the floor from my drinks. To those who have always stood by me, I’m truly sorry, but right now, I can’t keep myself sober.” She expressed this in song.

A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.

She openly shared her struggles with addiction on Instagram two weeks ago, stating that this illness doesn’t simply vanish or diminish over time. Instead, it’s something she must persistently battle and hasn’t conquered yet…Now, she needs time to mend and dedicate herself to her sobriety and path towards recovery. The affection you’ve all shown me will always be treasured, and I eagerly anticipate the day when I can declare victory over this challenge. I’ll keep fighting with every ounce of strength I have.

In 2018, she recounted her struggles with addictions to sex and alcohol. “My addictions can change. They can move around,” she explained, admitting that in her younger years, she may have had a form of sexual addiction, as she believed that everything could be resolved through sex. She further discussed the moment she recognized she had fallen into a problematic drinking habit.

She shared that there was a time when she was alone at home, with three bottles of wine, and she was considering opening the third one. She expressed, “Wait a minute! Here you are, all by yourself, drinking your third bottle of wine? There could be an issue here.

She explained, “I chose to quit abruptly, that’s just my style. I tend to do things in cold turkey fashion. I’m a person who can easily get caught up in activities and need to keep myself in check. The issue isn’t the action itself, but rather the reason behind it and the behavior connected to it. If you enjoy having a lot of sex, that’s fine, but consider why you’re engaging in such frequent activity. That’s the key question to ask.

A member of the Backstreet Boys experimented with drugs for the first time prior to filming the music video for “The Call” in 2000. He confessed years later on Good Morning America that he felt incredibly energetic during the shoot. He achieved sobriety in 2021 and experienced multiple positive outcomes within a year, such as shedding 32 pounds over seven months by eliminating alcohol and fast food from his diet.

In an interview with Today in September 2022, he stated that alcohol led to an increase in his weight, but it additionally had a negative impact on his emotional well-being.

Following Mac Miller’s untimely demise, rapper Bow Wow (formerly known as Shad Moss) shared on Twitter his past struggle with an addiction to cough syrup. In a series of tweets, he admitted that during the creation of the album “Face Off” with Omarion, he was addicted to lean and high almost every day. He confessed that this affected his attitude, relationships with fans, and even led to missing shows on tour with Chris Brown due to illness. Bow Wow emphasized the severe pain he experienced and the long-term effects on his health. He encouraged his followers to stay drug-free, break the cycle of addiction, and save the youth from early deaths. He urged parents to monitor their children and warned against following harmful trends.

In 2018, the singer openly discussed her struggles with addiction, particularly cocaine abuse and excessive drinking, in both her fourth album titled “No Shame” and her memoir called “My Thoughts Exactly.” The intervention was organized by her ex-husband Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow following an incident where she accidentally headbutted Orlando Bloom at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party, causing herself to faint.

In the depths of my struggle, I confided to The Guardian, “I found myself yearning for something that could touch my emptiness and provide solace. On a particularly bleak morning during those difficult times, a thought crossed my mind: ‘Perhaps it’s time to turn to heroin, as nothing else I’ve tried seems to have an impact.’

Throughout the 1980s, the actor known for his role in The Parent Trap struggled with a cocaine addiction that eventually led him to rehab in 1990. In an interview on Today, he shared that he grew up during the ’60s and ’70s when there was a much more relaxed attitude towards drug use.

He confessed in 2018 that he was a near-daily cocaine user during the ’80s. He would frequently pray to God to help him quit, only to find himself rationalizing his use by late afternoon.

He shared an intense personal moment where he felt as if he was facing either death or losing all that mattered to him, which he referred to as a “white light experience”. Afterwards, he needed to confide in his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, about what had transpired. It was at this point that he decided to seek help and end his relationship with cocaine.

Following an incident at a Newport Beach hotel where Ryan Lochte attempted to force open his own room door, Lochte decided to seek treatment in 2018. According to a statement made to TopMob News by his representative, “Ryan has been struggling with alcohol addiction for quite some time and sadly it has led him down a destructive path. He has come to the realization that he requires professional help to overcome this issue, and he will be seeking immediate treatment.

For Ryan, it’s crucial to defeat this disease immediately so he can steer clear of future regrettable actions, strive to be an exceptional husband and father, and if he aspires to regain his swimming dominance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – his fifth games.

One important factor motivating him to give up alcohol was his relationship with Melanie Lynskey, despite understanding that it’s not typically advised to get sober for someone else.

In his interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, he shared, “I realized she was exceptional, and I believed someone deserving would benefit from her greatness. However, I didn’t feel like I fit that description – I felt a tad unstable.

However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.

In the beginning stages of their relationship, he found it simpler to claim that he was acting for her because, at the time, he felt his self-worth wasn’t particularly high. He didn’t worry as much about causing himself pain compared to causing her pain, so it was easier for him to assert, “I’m doing this for her.” Now, however, he is doing it for his own sake.

For approximately ten years now, the nation’s music icon has maintained sobriety, but achieving this milestone wasn’t an easy journey. His struggle with alcohol and prescription pain medication started shortly after he graduated from high school and persisted even as his career flourished. He admitted to always having a black leather laptop bag filled with Jägermeister or vodka within easy reach. During the day, every hour and a half to two hours would be followed by a couple of strong drinks, and every three to four hours, he’d take one or two pills.

Despite the situation, he acknowledged that it didn’t hinder his achievements. He clarified, “I wasn’t staggering about aimlessly every day.” Instead, he asserted, “I was operating at full capacity — I wrote more songs back then than I do currently. That was what made it unsettling.

In late 2011, he was admitted to the hospital due to pancreatitis, and doctors warned him that if he continued drinking, he might not live to see his next birthday. However, he hesitated to quit and tried to moderate his consumption on his own, such as limiting himself to two pills per day or only consuming a certain amount from his bottle and making marks on the bottle. This strategy worked for a few days, but then someone would throw a party, causing him to relapse.

Eventually, he realized he needed assistance and checked into rehab on December 18, 2011. “I reached a point where I understood it was something I couldn’t handle alone,” Gilbert explained. “It infuriated me beyond belief and left me feeling embarrassed. I’m generally a determined person, but this was the one aspect of my life that I just couldn’t seem to conquer.
