Craig Melvin will be missing Hoda Kotb today and everyday.
The NBC news host, who is set to take over from Hoda following her last broadcast on Today on January 10th, discussed the emotions surrounding the upcoming farewell of a TV legend from the show.
Craig shared with TopMob News at the Start Today launch event in New York City on Jan. 7 that the experience is both joyful and sad: “It’s a mix of feelings, like riding a roller coaster every day.
The 45-year-old mentioned that they have many exciting plans prepared for Hoda, whom they referred to as the essence of ‘Today’, further stating, “I am incredibly sad about this.
But it’ll be a change for Craig, too, who will have to “get up a little earlier” for his new role.
As someone who usually keeps feelings at bay, I must confess that I too find myself harboring a touch of apprehension regarding Monday.
To be honest, Craig has been experiencing an even mix of excitement and nervousness each day. He mentioned that he’s even more eager for his second performance taking over Hoda’s slot than he was for his initial one.
In the end, Craig is optimistic that they can preserve the unique essence that sets their morning show apart by avoiding major transformations.
He expressed the hope that the changes wouldn’t be noticeable to many viewers, saying jokingly, “Next Monday, I might even sport a wig, and we’re expecting some viewers to think, ‘Hoda’s got a new hairstyle!’
Regarding Hoda, she initially announced her departure from the Today show in September, partly due to a desire to devote more time to her daughters, Haley and Joy (aged 7) as well as Hope Catherine (5), whom she shares with her ex, Joel Schiffman.
She acknowledged that she had her children later in life and felt it necessary to give them a larger share of her time. Since time is limited, she considered this as one of the toughest decisions she’s ever made.
She was equally excited that Craig would assume her position, expressing to him upon his announcement in November: “You possess everything necessary for this job. You are indeed the ideal candidate.
