Crash Bandicoot Devs Eye New Banjo-Kazooie Game!

It’s well-known that Banjo-Kazooie has been underutilized since Microsoft took over the franchise. The series shifted to Xbox after Nintendo sold its share in Rare back in 2002. Since then, no new game in the series has been released by Xbox, with the last one being Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts in 2008. This game didn’t quite live up to the charm of the first two games on N64, according to fans. At present, the characters are in a holding pattern, but one developer, Toys for Bob, has made it clear that they are eager to develop a new game in the series.

If you’re not familiar with Toys for Bob, this development company is primarily recognized for their contributions to the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon series. After Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, Toys for Bob opted to operate as an independent studio, while maintaining a strong alliance with Microsoft. They are currently developing a game set to be released under Xbox Game Studios. In a recent interview with Canadian Guy Eh (through Video Games Chronicle), Toys for Bob’s head, Paul Yan, openly expressed his enthusiasm about the possibility of creating a new Banjo-Kazooie game.

One collaborator we’re keen on continuing our relationship with is Team Xbox, who have proven to be an excellent partner and boast a captivating ensemble of characters that Toys for Bob could find incredibly engaging. Yan mentioned this to Canadian Guy Eh, suggesting the honey bear as a potential character to revive. He humorously added, “I think we can all agree that Banjo has been in a long enough slumber, don’t you?

The downside is that Yan’s remark appears to indicate that the latest Toys for Bob game isn’t Banjo-Kazooie, contrary to some expectations; this could mean they are developing another Crash Bandicoot or Spyro title instead. However, it’s worth noting that this might be one of the rare instances where a developer is openly pursuing a position on the franchise. Moreover, the fact that this team has a good working relationship with Xbox offers a promising outlook.

2020 saw Xbox leader Phil Spencer being questioned by Kotaku about the possible return of Banjo-Kazooie and Conker. He replied that he lets the studios decide what projects they want to work on, rather than assigning teams to specific properties to rush out new games. This approach could be why we haven’t seen a new Banjo-Kazooie game in years – many studios might have been reluctant to create a new game. Encouragingly, the head of Toys for Bob has expressed interest in developing a new game featuring Banjo and Kazooie, but we’ll have to keep an eye out to see if Xbox accepts their proposal.
