Ready for some crazy good news?
Henry Golding recently gave an update on the Crazy Rich Asians TV series.
Adele Lim is recovering, the actor revealed during an exclusive interview with TopMob News on April 27th. She’s the showrunner for our series, and she worked alongside Peter Chiarelli as a writer in the first one. Recently, she visited London around four weeks ago to discuss our characters with me and Gemma [Chan]. Thus, things are progressing.
For quite a while now, enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating events to unfold. Back in 2018, the highly anticipated movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” adapted from Kevin Kwan’s best-selling book of the same title, graced theater screens and turned out to be a major success at the worldwide box office.
In this romantic comedy, the narrative follows Rachel Chu, portrayed by Constance Wu, who resides in New York alongside her boyfriend Nick Young. However, a trip to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding introduces some unexpected elements: not only is Nick well-known as one of the nation’s most eligible bachelors, but his family boasts an extravagant wealth that borders on the extraordinary.
Beyond stating, it becomes clear that Michelle Yeoh’s character, Eleanor Young (Nick’s mother), isn’t overly fond of Rachel upon first meeting. As the journey unfolds, both Rachel and Nick ponder whether Nick may have to make a difficult choice between his relationship with her and his family ties.
The movie boasted an illustrious ensemble of actors beyond Wu, Golding, Yeoh, and Chan, featuring the likes of Awkwafina, Lisa Lu, Harry Shum Jr., and Ken Jeong.
Fans have been eagerly waiting for the next installment in the “Crazy Rich Asians” trilogy for seven years now, but director Jon M. Chu has explained the delay in its release.
As an over-the-moon fan, I shared during a November episode of Deadline’s Crew Call podcast that I won’t resurrect everyone unless it truly matters. The stakes are simply too high for all involved.
As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait.
He mentioned that he desires something exceptional, aiming to match the quality of “Crazy Rich Asians 1”. They’ve experimented with various interpretations, but it’s challenging because the first movie doesn’t exactly mirror the book. While it captures the right essence, the narrative is significantly different. Consequently, a direct translation isn’t feasible. They’ve attempted several versions, but they haven’t found the right fit yet. He emphasizes that he won’t compromise the audience’s expectations, as the bar set by the first movie is too high. Therefore, they will only proceed when they reach that level of quality.

In 2018, news started circulating that Jon M. Chu would return to direct the sequel of “Crazy Rich Asians,” following the success of the initial movie. However, over time, rumors emerged about potential changes in the writing team.
2019 saw Chu publicly commenting following an article by The Hollywood Reporter that revealed Adele Lim had departed from the sequel due to a reported salary disagreement with co-writer Peter Chiarelli concerning their compensation.
He wrote on social media (as reported by Deadline), “Since I’m good friends with Adele, when I found out she wasn’t satisfied with the first proposal, we all – producers, me, and studio executives – immediately took steps to achieve equal compensation for both writers. This was a substantial amount. The conversation about this issue was enlightening and impactful, covering various perspectives. Unfortunately, by the time we had developed multiple solutions to meet everyone’s requirements, too much time had elapsed, and she ultimately turned down the offer.
Chu mentioned that he was proud of Lim for having the courage to determine her personal value and leaving when she sensed she wasn’t being respected appropriately.
The passage of time, or schedules, has contributed to delays. For example, Chu moved on to direct “In the Heights” and “Wicked”, while Michelle Yeoh appeared in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.
In 2024, Kevin Kwan shared with GMA that it was incredible how busy everything had become. This surge of activity catapulted Jon Chu’s career, as well as those of the actors. Michelle even received an Oscar. Now, they’ve taken their time to celebrate these victories. However, according to Kwan, everyone seems eager to return and work on Crazy Rich Asians 2.
In addition to other considerations, there was the issue of the script. During a November 2024 episode of Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Chu expressed, “I won’t revive everyone unless it proves beneficial.” He emphasized, “There’s too much at stake for all involved.
And he wants the sequel to be at the same level as the first film.
The filmmaker expressed, “I aim for excellence; I want it to match the greatness of ‘Crazy Rich Asians 1’.
As a die-hard fan, I can relate when Yeoh speaks of the challenge. It’s tough when you’ve achieved significant success and wonder, “How do I surpass it?” she expressed during Kering Group’s 2023 Women in Motion Talk, as reported by Variety. The weightiest burden on her shoulders is the question, ‘Can I make it better, bigger, more?’ It seems they are all searching for the perfect narrative. But with an endless supply of stories from Kevin Kwan, we can anticipate new adventures ahead!
Harry Shum Jr. believes that carefully developing the narrative is key: “When creating a sequel, there are times when things move too fast and you don’t get the story quite right,” he said to TopMob News during the 2023 Oscars. “That’s why they’re really working hard to ensure they deliver what fans expect.
In my expertise as a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share insights about the captivating novel titled “China Rich Girlfriend”. This story unfolds before the nuptials of Rachel Chu, portrayed by Constance Wu and Henry Golding in the film adaptation. However, Rachel’s heart is far from bridal bliss.
As described on author Kevin Kwan’s website, Rachel grieves the absence of her birth father, a man she never knew, who won’t be able to escort her down the aisle. That is until an astonishing disclosure pulls Rachel into a dazzling realm of Shanghai opulence, surpassing anything she could have ever imagined. Here we are introduced to Carlton, a rebellious playboy with a knack for high-speed Ferrari crashes reminiscent of Prince Harry’s exploits; Colette, a celebrity girlfriend pursued by frenzied paparazzi; and the man Rachel has long awaited meeting – her father.
In the next installment, we reintroduce some of the characters from the initial story, such as Nick’s mother Eleanor Young (Yeoh), Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina), Astrid Teo (Gemma Chan), and Charlie Wu (Shum).
Initially, it was speculated that the film sequel would merge the plotlines from the second and third books, titled “Rich People Problems”. However, as Chu had earlier mentioned, the story did not strictly adhere to the narrative of the initial novel.
In my expertise as a lifestyle enthusiast, I must admit that we’ve explored countless interpretations. It’s a tricky situation because audiences often equate the initial movie with the book, but the truth is they bear little resemblance. The essence is similar, but the narrative structure varies significantly. This isn’t as simple as a direct translation, and after numerous attempts, we’ve yet to hit the mark.
By February 2025, it was announced that HBO Max was working on a television version of “Crazy Rich Asians.” In this project, Lim will serve as the showrunner, while all three of them – Lim, Chu, and Kwan – will take on the roles of executive producers.
According to insider reports, it appears that the show won’t be taking the place of the second movie as initially speculated.
Chu confirmed to Entertainment Tonight in April 2025 that they’re developing the sequel. However, he also mentioned that they’re working on a Max show featuring other stories as well. He didn’t reveal much, but it seems like some progress is being made.
As for the thought process behind taking Crazy Rich Asians to the TV screen?
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in March 2025, Chu acknowledged the need for more space for the project. He explained, “We kept refining the movie, and we’re still in the process of creating a version that I can’t discuss just yet.
He explained, “It’s not certain if it serves as a sequel, but every character we wished to delve deeper into required more space, and a film wasn’t providing that for us. Consequently, we had an opportunity to welcome Adele back into the storyline.
It appears that discussions regarding potential cast members for the upcoming TV series are ongoing, though no definitive decisions have been made yet.
Golding shared with Today in April that everyone’s buzzing with excitement. He was recently with Nora, Awkwafina (a fellow New Yorker), and they were brainstorming. Adele Lim also dropped by their place. She visited Golding and Gemma in London not long ago to discuss the future plans. They have a longer-term series format, so they have plenty of room to fully reveal the world hinted at in “Crazy Rich”. They’re really looking forward to sharing more.
In the event that a new film of “Crazy Rich Asians” is made, many of the actors would be more than eager to reprise their roles.
In a 2021 episode of the Tamron Hall Show, Wu admitted, “I don’t have any information at the moment.” However, he shared his anticipation by saying, “I’ll be ready whenever it takes place. As for me, I prefer to concentrate on my work as an actor. I haven’t received a script yet, but I know they’re working on one. I can’t wait to return if and when the opportunity arises.
For now, it seems like we’ll all need to keep waiting and hope for updates. In an interview with TopMob in August 2024, Awkwafina shared that she hasn’t received any information regarding filming yet. She expressed her eagerness to learn more about the project.
