As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has grown up with the Dark Knight and his rogues gallery, I was thrilled to see Rupert Thorne making an appearance in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos. While it was only a brief cameo, Benjamin Byron Davis‘ portrayal of this iconic Batman villain left me wanting more.
Having been a fan since the days of Michael Gough and Jack Palance, I must admit that Davis’ take on Thorne resonated with me, blending just the right amount of menace and charm. His performance was so captivating that it made me wish for a larger role in the DC Universe.
During our conversation, Davis expressed his enthusiasm for reprising the character in live-action, should the opportunity arise. As someone who stands at six and a half feet tall, he would certainly make an imposing Thorne. I found myself chuckling at the thought of this towering actor bringing even a small corner of Gotham City to life with his formidable presence.
At this point, it remains to be seen whether or not Rupert Thorne will appear in another DC Universe project. With the Batman adaptation of Brave and the Bold on the horizon and Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie still in development, there is a possibility that we might see more of Thorne in the future.
For now, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this notorious mobster will make his return to Gotham City. After all, as they say, it takes a Thorne to catch a Batman!
In flashbacks or not, the infamous Batman antagonist Rupert Thorne has found a place in the growing DC Universe, making his debut in the sixth episode of James Gunn’s Creature Commandos. Here, he is woven into Doctor Phosphorus’ background. In this new portrayal, Benjamin Byron Davis lends his voice to the ruthless mobster character. Fans are eagerly anticipating a possible future live-action return of Thorne by Davis.
A key point to keep in mind with the fresh DCU is that characters will be consistently portrayed across different formats. Actors who voice characters in animated productions may reprise their roles in live-action films or series, and the reverse is also possible. This opens up a possibility for Davis to reappear as Rupert Thorne when the new Gotham City ensemble comes together.
Prior to the release of the new “Creature Commandos” on Thursday, Davis shared insights with ComicBook regarding his fresh approach to Thorne and expressed his enthusiasm for potentially expanding the character in the future.
Davis shared with us, “Rupert seems like an engaging environment to be in, and I’d definitely be thrilled about it.” He added, “To tell you the truth, I can’t predict what will happen next, but I’m simply overjoyed to contribute in any way possible. The thought that I might play a small role in this world that has been shaping my imagination and artistic development… Many of us who grew up reading comics may find it surprising to learn about the complex stories they contain. So, for me, this opportunity is very significant.
It’s truly special for me to have a role in, thanks to James, a tiny segment of Gotham City or the larger DC Universe. The thought of embodying this character in real life would be incredible. Given my height of six and a half feet, I find it appealing that he could be a powerful figure.
As a die-hard DC Comics fan with years of immersion in the rich and complex universe they’ve built, I can’t help but feel a tinge of anticipation when it comes to the potential reappearance of Rupert Thorne in another project. While the upcoming Batman adaptation of “Batman: Brave and Bold” piques my curiosity, its release date remains elusive, leaving me hanging on the edge of my seat.
However, the Clayface movie from Mike Flanagan has caught my attention, not just because of its talented director, but also for the possibility it presents to bring Thorne back into the fray. As a character with a rich and intricate history in the DC Universe, I’m eager to see how the film will handle the titular character, especially if they choose to involve Thorne in the storyline.
All in all, while I can’t predict the future of these projects, my passion for DC Comics and their characters keeps me hopeful that we’ll see more of Rupert Thorne in the years to come.
Creature Commandos is now streaming on Max.
