As a lifelong cinephile and DC Universe enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters from their humble comic book beginnings to the silver screen, I must say that the latest episode of Creature Commandos left me absolutely thrilled! The subtle yet significant reference to Bat-Mite, a character I hold dear to my heart since my formative years, added an extra layer of excitement and nostalgia to this fantastic series.
Bat-Mite, the impish admirer from another dimension, has always been a fan favorite for his unique blend of mischief and devotion to Batman. Seeing him mentioned in such a casual yet meaningful way by none other than James Gunn himself, one of the masterminds behind this new DCU, was truly a treat.
I can’t help but imagine what kind of shenanigans Bat-Mite might cause within the world of Creature Commandos! Perhaps he’ll join forces with Mister Mxyzptlk, another Fifth Dimension resident and Superman’s eternal tormentor, to create chaos in this new universe. Only time will tell!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder what Bat-Mite would make of the current trend of superhero movies and shows. Maybe he’d be delighted with all the attention or perhaps he’d find it all rather mundane compared to his own interdimensional adventures. One thing is for certain – Bat-Mite is a character that never fails to bring a smile to my face!
Holy Bat-Mite, indeed! Now, if only I could get my hands on one of those adorable statuettes James Gunn mentioned…
As a dedicated fan of DC Comics who has been following the universe for several decades now, I must say that the latest addition to the roster of shows – Creature Commandos – is a breath of fresh air. This series, being part of the new DCU canon, has managed to bring together an eclectic mix of characters from the comic books, both famous and lesser-known, in a way that feels authentic yet excitingly new.
The sixth episode, “Priyatel Skelet,” in particular, was a standout for me. It featured the Batman villains Clayface (Alan Tudyk) and Rupert Thorne (Benjamin Byron Davis), with brief appearances by the Dark Knight himself, along with a host of other iconic characters such as Superman, Sgt. Rock, Gorilla Grodd, and Circe (Anya Chalotra). The episode also introduced us to inmates of Belle Reve’s Non-Human Interment Division, where A.R.G.U.S. has imprisoned a variety of supervillains like Congorilla, Nosferata, Orca, and Chemo.
I found the way these characters were woven into the story to be both intriguing and engaging, with each one contributing to the overall narrative in their unique ways. The blend of action, humor, and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I eagerly await future episodes to see how the story unfolds. For any fellow DC Comics enthusiasts out there, I highly recommend giving Creature Commandos a watch – it’s a must-see for fans of the universe!
The second-to-last episode of the season is brimming with Easter eggs and nods to the expansive DC Universe, subtly hinting at the mischievous beings of the Fifth Dimension.
When Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), head of A.R.G.U.S., and John Economos (Steve Agee) discover that Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) has been hospitalized following a brutal encounter with Clayface, they’re informed that an unidentified creature delivered Flag to the emergency room entrance. Intrigued, Waller inquires about the nature of this mystery beast, but Economos offers a range of possibilities: “Could it be a Reptaloid? Or Amphibious? Perhaps Simian? Mite? Or even a Poltergeist?
As it turns out, the monster I’m supporting is none other than Eric Frankenstein, played by David Harbour. Interestingly enough, “Mite” is a nod to Bat-Mite, an impish character from the Fifth Dimension’s planet Zrfff who’s much like an elf. Last year, the writer of Creature Commandos and DC Studios co-chief, James Gunn, openly expressed his admiration for Bat-Mite in a social media post.
It’s no secret that Bat-Mite is a character I adore. I have figurines of him at home. Picture having a mischievous little imp who imitates you, idolizes you, but is downright spooky, and then lands you in trouble just for the fun of watching you squirm your way out. What a fascinating character! This book won me over when I was around 12 years old, and it along with another Superman one were my favorite Christmas gifts ever received.
Holy Bat-Mite, Batman!
In 1959, during the Silver Age, the character named Bat-Mite first appeared in Detective Comics issue #267, created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. This diminutive figure mysteriously popped up in the Bat-Cave where Batman and Robin were, dressed oddly in a Batman costume. When Robin referred to him as an “elf” wearing a bizarre Batman outfit, the tiny creature clarified he wasn’t an elf but rather hailed from another dimension where all males share his size. Naming himself after his idol Batman (Bat-Mite is derived from Zrfffian), this being endeavored to transform the Dynamic Duo into a three-member crime-fighting team.
Instead of being accepted, Bat-Mite transformed into an invisible entity and employed his unusual magical abilities to aid Batman and Robin in apprehending robbers. Despite causing some mischief before departing for his home dimension, he always found time to visit Batman and Robin when not with the Justice Mites of America in the Fifth Dimension.
Additionally, Mister Mxyzptlk, a mischievous gnome-like figure from the Fifth Dimension, often causes trouble and stirs up chaos in Metropolis by teasing Superman and creating problems for him.
Or:
Originating from the Fifth Dimension, the trickster Mister Mxyzptlk, resembling a gnome, frequently brings turmoil to Metropolis by tormenting Superman with his antics.
Both sentences convey the same meaning and are easily understandable.
DC’s Creature Commandos is now streaming on Max.
