As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with a soft spot for war-themed narratives, I must admit that the third episode of Creature Commandos has left me utterly spellbound. The way it seamlessly intertwines the past and present, while delving into the backstory of characters like GI Robot, is nothing short of masterful storytelling.
Episode 3 of Creature Commandos upends expectations, demonstrating no character is invulnerable within the DC Universe’s initial series. Concurrently, as Task Force M engages in battle against Circe (portrayed by Anya Chalotra), this episode delves into the past of GI Robot (voiced by Sean Gunn). Originally designed to eradicate Nazis, GI Robot struggled to adapt when war ceased – a formidable challenge that ultimately led him to Belle Reve penitentiary. Throughout his journey, GI Robot crossed paths with numerous pivotal DC Comics characters, hinting at various figures who might appear in James Gunn’s DCU.
Sgt. Rock and the Easy Company
In World War II, GI Robot served alongside Easy Company, a military unit famously led by Sergeant Rock. Under his guidance, Easy Company provided DC Comics with material for their main storyline, depicting the experiences of American soldiers during the Great War. This included their role in defeating the Nazis as well as encountering supernatural enemies like zombies on occasion.
It’s quite fitting that Easy Company shows up in Creature Commandos, considering rumors suggest Luca Guadagnino is working on a Sgt. Rock film for DC Studios. If this movie gets made, it’s possible GI Robot might make an appearance in the live-action version, providing fans with a familiar metallic visage to help acquaint them with the less known war characters.
In this particular sequence, Sgt. Rock (portrayed by Maury Sterling), Little Sure Shot (voiced by Robbie Daymond), and Bulldozer (voiced by Paul Ben-Victor) are the ones who have their lines. Later on in the episode, GI Robot makes mention of additional members from the Easy Company, specifically Wildman, Canary, and Four-Eyes.
William Magnus & The Metal Men
After determining that it’s no longer necessary, the Army passes on the robotic soldier known as GI Robot to robotics expert Dr. William Magnus (voiced by Alan Tudyk). In DC Comics, Dr. Magnus is the inventor of the Metal Men, a team of artificial superheroes. In the DC Universe, Dr. Magnus employs GI Robot to expand his understanding of artificial intelligence, implying that this metallic soldier serves as an inspiration for Dr. Magnus as he develops his Metal Men.
During the laboratory scene, we can see that Will’s initial sketches featured designs for a robot named Metal Man. In these blueprints, you can discern the emblem for the six metals bestowed with consciousness and extraordinary abilities: Gold, Iron, Mercury, Lead, Tin, and Platinum, often referred to as “Tina.” In the comics, the Metal Men exhibit varying degrees of shape-shifting capabilities, and each character has a distinct personality that mirrors the unique chemical traits of their metal counterpart.
Currently, there’s no confirmed Metal Men project within the DC Universe. But, given that Gunn intends to craft tales spanning various decades, this team could potentially occupy the 1960s time slot in the timeline. As William Magnus was working on GI Robot around twenty years after World War II’s end, these characters might fit perfectly into that era.
Belle Reve’s Obscure DC Villain Inmates
Following an unintended attendance at a gathering of the local National Socialist Club in Hub City, the GI Robot finds himself ethically bound to eliminate any Nazis present. Regrettably, this action leads to his conviction for manslaughter and a life sentence behind bars. The GI Robot is relocated to Belle Reve Penitentiary, where he subsequently joins Task Force M. What makes this more intriguing is that upon entering prison, the GI Robot encounters some lesser-known DC villains.
As GI Robot is showcased along Belle Reve’s hallways, we catch glimpses of the DC Universe’s Crimson Centipede and Animal-Vegetal-Mineral Man. It’s likely that the other two characters in this scene are variations of Shaggy Man and The Fisherman. Interestingly, these villains first appeared in comics between 1964 and 1967. Since GI Robot might have been imprisoned at Belle Reve for years, possibly decades, these villains could symbolize the kinds of threats that existed before Superman made his debut in Metropolis.
Just for a quick overlook, Crimson Centipede is a Wonder Woman rogue. Created by Ares, he’s a formidable fighter who can induce anyone into a bloodlusting frenzy. The Animal-Vegetal-Mineral Man is a Doom Patrol enemy capable of turning any individual part of his body into anything animal, vegetable, or mineral. Shaggy Man is an uncontrollable force of destruction who doesn’t need to eat, drink, or sleep and first served as a Justice League foe. Finally, the Fisherman is an Aquaman villain who was first thought to be a high-tech pirate before it was revealed he was being controlled by an interdimensional parasite willing to conquer Earth.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
