As a long-time fan of DC comics and someone who has witnessed the evolution of the universe over the years, I must say that James Gunn’s Creature Commandos is a delightful addition to the franchise. The introduction of characters like “The Bride” adds a fresh perspective to our beloved DC Universe.
In the new series “DC’s Creature Commandos”, audiences meet an assorted group of real-life monsters, who are now serving under the command of Amanda Waller. This diverse team includes “The Bride” (portrayed by Indira Varma), a DC Comics character inspired by the legendary ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ from literature. As shown in the second episode of “Creature Commandos”, The Bride was created in 1831, making her one of the most historically impactful characters in James Gunn’s DC Universe. With this backstory, she could potentially connect the modern and old eras within the franchise.
But how old is The Bride, exactly?
The Bride’s Age Makes Her a Key DCU Character
The Bride’s age can be calculated based on the DCU’s established timeline. According to Rick Flag Sr. (voiced by Frank Grillo), his son died about two years before the Creature Commandos’ events. We know that Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) is killed by Peacemaker (John Cena) during Task Force X’s operation in Corto Maltese, where Waller’s Task Force X fought Starro. Since Gunn has said The Suicide Squad takes place in 2021, we can infer Creature Commandos is probably set in 2023. So, from her creation in 1831 to the show’s present-day in 2023, The Bride is approximately 192 years old.
Until additional DCU projects debut, we can only make an approximation about when “Creature Commandos” is set. Consequently, The Bride might be a year either younger or older. However, her age places her among the DCU’s oldest living characters, sharing this distinction with her monster counterpart Eric Frankenstein (voiced by David Harbour). This detail is crucial for the development of the DCU’s universe.
In the familiar DC superhero universe, instead of recounting each character’s backstory from scratch, Gunn proposes a fresh start for the DC cinematic universe by assuming that figures like Batman and Superman have been actively fighting crime for quite some time before making their screen debut. This allows the DCU to focus on current events without being overly concerned about the past. Yet, new movies and series can still provide insights into what transpired in the years, or even decades, leading up to the main storyline.
When it’s time to delve into the past of the DCU, Gunn might choose a recognizable character to weave all the elements together. Enter The Bride, who, having lived for nearly two centuries, has been present at almost every significant event in the DCU since the late 19th century. This makes her an ideal candidate for prequel stories, as she could demonstrate how each piece of media from DC Studios is interconnected. This idea is intriguing because it hints at Gunn’s ambitious plan to make the new DC Universe more comprehensive than any other adaptation of DC Comics.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
