Creature Commandos New Look Revealed with DC Variant Covers

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who’s been following these characters since their inception, I’ve gotta say, the news about the upcoming Creature Commandos series is nothing short of electrifying! The roster they’ve assembled for this show is truly monstrous – in a good way, of course. And the fact that we’re getting variant covers for some of DC’s biggest titles? That’s just the icing on the cake!

For a few weeks now, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the first trailer for “Creature Commandos”, marking the introduction of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe’s first title. This adult-oriented animated series offers a fresh take on the monster-themed antihero team, who have made occasional appearances in comics since their 1980 debut. As we inch closer to “Creature Commandos” release date in December, the anticipation among fans is growing. In an unusual marketing strategy, DC is planning to showcase the series by releasing four “Creature Commandos” variant covers for issues of “Action Comics” #1076, “Batman and Robin” #15, “Batman/Superman: World’s Finest” #33, and “Superman” #20 in November. This is on top of the standalone title, ““, which is being penned by David Dastmalchian, star of “The Suicide Squad”.

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast with fond memories of collecting issues as a kid and poring over them for hours on end, I am genuinely thrilled about the latest developments regarding Creature Commandos. Having grown up reading DC comics, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about this upcoming reveal via their variant covers. The fact that there will be an exclusive reprint of Creature Commandos #1 at San Diego Comic-Con is particularly exciting for me, as it means I’ll get to see a new piece of key art from the series that I can add to my collection. This latest look at Creature Commandos is sure to bring back memories and spark excitement among fellow comic book fans who have been waiting patiently for more news about this unique and entertaining series.

Who Are DC’s Creature Commandos?

Originally conceived by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick in issue #93 of Weird War Tales, the Creature Commandos are a unique team, born from human-monster unions, who execute government missions on the battlefield. The cast for the upcoming TV series will feature Eric Frankenstein (played by David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zo? Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), a GI Robot (Sean Gunn), and Weasel (also played by Sean Gunn).

In addition to the main cast, we’ll see Anya Chalotra playing Circe, Maria Bakalova portraying Princess Ilana Rostovic, Viola Davis in the role of Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee acting as John Economos.

Will the Creature Commandos Appear in Live-Action?

As an ardent fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I share this fantastic news! The stellar cast of Creature Commandos will indeed be back for live-action roles in the near future. Notably, their characters have been confirmed to make an appearance in Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie slated for summer 2025. Moreover, Grillo is set to reprise his iconic role as Rick Flag Sr. in the much-anticipated second season of Peacemaker.

“Harbour shared an intriguing perspective on his portrayal of Frankenstein in an interview with ‘Happy, Sad, Confused’ this year. He explained that while Frankenstein was designed to be a refined, educated man, he still harbors an unusual, inhuman anger and confusion. This made the role fascinating to play, and Harbour found James, who creates this universe, to be an exceptional individual. With numerous possibilities for character development, there could be live-action, animated, or any other versions of these characters.”

The “Creature Commandos” are set to make their premiere only on Max in December. Scroll down to catch a glimpse of the initial looks at the variant cover versions for the series, released by DC in November 2024.
