Creature Commandos Season Trailer Shows Dead Superman (And More Doomed DCU Superheroes)

As a seasoned gamer and DC Comics enthusiast with over two decades of immersion into this rich universe, I must say that the latest news about the “Creature Commandos” has me both intrigued and concerned. The prospect of Superman’s untimely demise before his cinematic debut is indeed a bold move, one that only James Gunn could pull off.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about one of the most historic storylines in the annals of DC Comics – the epic saga known as “The Death of Superman.” This tale has been brought to life in various forms, from live-action in films like “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Superman & Lois,” to animation in productions such as “Superman: Doomsday” and the two-part “Death of Superman” and “Reign of the Supermen.” It has also been a central plot in video games like “The Death and Return of Superman.

In this animated scene, Superman is depicted with blood on him and what seems like dead bodies of Mister Terrific and Starfire (the Tamaran Teen Titan) impaled on stakes. Nearby, the remnants of Peacemaker lie on a battlefield littered with bones. This grim tableau turns out to be a prophecy of an apocalyptic future shown by the rogue Amazonian sorceress Circe (voiced by Anya Chalotra), who asserts that she is the true heir to the throne of Themyscira, the legendary, female-only island nation and birthplace of Wonder Woman.

In the coming weeks’ sneak peek, Circe is depicted chasing Princess Ilana Rostovic of oil-rich Pokolistan, who is next in line to the throne. At one point, the witch, stained with blood, warns the Creature Commandos: “You don’t grasp the gravity of your actions. You’ve sealed the fate of our world!

Following the occurrences of “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker”, Creature Commandos introduces Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), now the A.R.G.U.S. Director, enlisting General Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) to head Task Force M, a replacement for the discontinued Task Force X due to Congress’s decision.

Inmates from the Belle Reve Non-Human Detention Facility include The Bride (Indira Varma), the sociopathic Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) who has been irradiated, the battle-hardened veteran G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn, who is also Weasel), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), with a fishbowl-like head, and the feral Weasel (again Sean Gunn). These characters were previously imprisoned in the Belle Reve facility or part of Project Starfish in Corto Maltese, as seen in 2021’s “The Suicide Squad”. Their objective is to safeguard Princess Rostovic from Circe and her troops in Pokolistan.

The adult animated series ties seamlessly into Gunn’s Superman film, marking the commencement of the partially rebooted DC Universe. This is followed by season 2 of Peacemaker, starring Max. These three productions are interconnected through Grillo’s Flag Sr., the father of Rick Flag (played by Joel Kinnaman), who perished on Waller’s mission to Corto Maltese in The Suicide Squad.

Is Superman’s Death DCU Canon?

In the DC Extended Universe, Henry Cavill’s Superman was wounded by a Kryptonite bullet from the assassin Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and ultimately perished while fighting Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but miraculously came back to life during the storyline of Justice League. However, it’s possible that Corenswet’s Superman might have avoided such a fate, as per Gunn, only events within the DC Universe are considered canonical if they are explicitly mentioned in the DCU.

In this new version of the DC Universe, events are considered part of the official storyline if they are referenced or mentioned. If an event isn’t mentioned, it can be assumed that it didn’t occur or happened differently. For instance, the events in the Peacemaker finale are referenced in Creature Commandos, but the Justice League’s visit to Coverdale Ranch is not, indicating they don’t exist yet in the DCU.

New episodes of DC Studios’ Creature Commandos premiere Thursdays on Max.
