As a cinephile with a soft spot for both comic book adaptations and Western-themed narratives, I find myself drawn to the performances of Benjamin Byron Davis in both “Creature Commandos” and “Red Dead Redemption 2.” While his portrayal of Rupert Thorne may be tinged with a hint of bias due to the actor’s familiarity with the character, it is undeniable that Thorne embodies a level of villainy that transcends the screen.
Having spent countless hours immersed in the annals of Batman lore, I can attest to the fact that Rupert Thorne is no stranger to me. His corrupt politicking and criminal ties have long been a staple of Gotham City’s underbelly, making him a formidable adversary for the Dark Knight. It was intriguing to hear Davis speak about his familiarity with the character’s history and how he approached bringing Thorne to life in “Creature Commandos.”
In terms of comparison between Thorne and Dutch van der Linde, I would have to agree with Davis that Rupert Thorne is indeed a bigger bastard. While Dutch may have a noble ambition, Thorne’s lack of team-mindedness and apparent disregard for nobility make him a truly menacing presence in the world of DC Comics.
To lighten the mood, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought that perhaps Rupert Thorne sees nobility as something only for “suckers” in his world. After all, when it comes to villains, Thorne certainly knows how to play the game better than most!
As a seasoned movie reviewer with years of immersion in the world of cinema, I must say that the voice talent behind certain characters can leave a lasting impression. Take, for instance, Rupert Thorne from “Creature Commandos” and Dutch van der Linde in “Red Dead Redemption 2”. If you find their voices eerily familiar, you’re not alone – both are voiced by the talented Benjamin Byron Davis.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, I learned that Mr. Davis has a deep affection for both characters, but he admitted to having a bias towards the one he’s invested more time in so far. As someone who’s spent countless hours exploring the vast landscapes of video games and the intricate narratives within them, I can understand where he’s coming from.
Each character has their unique charm and darkness that resonates with audiences, and having a single actor bring both to life is truly remarkable. For me, it only enhances my appreciation for the artistry and skill involved in voice acting, as well as the immersive experiences these characters provide us. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Rupert Thorne or Dutch van der Linde yet, I highly recommend giving them a chance – you won’t be disappointed!
He contemplated the character of Rupert Thorne, saying, “You see, my familiarity with Dutch is far greater than with Rupert. For now, predicting the future is uncertain. However, based on what I know, I suspect that Rupert Thorne may be more ruthless than Dutch. Dutch, in my opinion, has a set of principles that resonate more with me than those of Thorne. Thorne, though, appears to me less team-oriented than Dutch believes. Dutch seems to genuinely strive for a noble goal, and I think Thorne’s world doesn’t leave much room for such nobility.
Davis chuckled upon reaching this realization, yet he made it clear that he was well-acquainted with the persona of Rupert Thorne prior to accepting the role. He explained, “I’m a comic book enthusiast! Thorne fits perfectly into my wheelhouse. I was aware of John Vernon’s work on the animated series and in films, as well as what had already been developed about the character. I also understood the concept that Thorne embodied within Batman’s history. As the character evolved from the iconic Adam West version to the more contemporary Batman we recognize today, I believe Thorne played a role in that editorial goal. Therefore, I am certainly conscious of the character’s past.
As a cinephile of comics, I’m well-versed in their rich history. Thorne, a character who first emerged on the DC Comics scene in 1977, has proven to be an exceptionally versatile villain for the publisher. Initially, he was portrayed as a corrupt Gotham City politician with deep connections to organized crime, using manipulation and bribes to sway public opinion against the Batman. He’s spent considerable time behind bars at Blackgate Penitentiary over the years, and despite significant changes like the New 52 and Rebirth events in DC’s timeline, Thorne was still incarcerated when last seen in a comic book in 2020.
In the animated series “Batman: The Animated Series,” Vernon took on Thorne’s character, often filling the role of Gotham City’s crime bosses. Notably, he played a part in developing the character Two-Face within that show. Later, Vernon reappeared as the same character in the spinoff film “Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman.” In 2004, the character made an appearance on Cartoon Network’s “The Batman,” with Victor Brandt providing the voiceover. More recently, Cedric Yarbrough voiced the character in “Batman: The Caped Crusader” in the past year.
In the latest episode of “Creature Commandos,” Thorne reconnects with Doctor Phosphorus (Alexander Sartorius), bringing him back to his origins. The show’s creators have hinted that things might not bode well for Thorne in this week’s installment, but Davis remains optimistic about future appearances. With only one episode left in the first season of “Creature Commandos,” fans can catch it on Max on Thursday, January 9th.
