As a gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired games under my belt, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming premiere of “Creature Commandos.” Having grown up reading DC comics and playing countless superhero video games, this series seems to be a unique blend that caters to both worlds.
As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as the debut of “Creature Commandos” approaches! This highly anticipated adult animated series, spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is set to launch the new chapter in the DC Universe with much pomp and circumstance. The team behind this show promises a gritty and emotionally charged adaptation of the titular superhero squad, made up of an all-star cast of monstrous characters.
In the middle of the latest “Creature Commandos” trailer, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is presenting Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) to the team. At this point, The Bride (Indira Varma) is visible, leafing through a tabloid magazine before tearing it apart. The magazine’s title is “Young Love”, matching the style of the DC romance series with the same name.
First published by Crestwood/Prize Magazine starting in 1949, Young Love was initially conceived to cash in on the popularity of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s hit series, Young Romance. The spin-off comic thrived throughout the 1950s and 1960s until Crestwood/Prize sold their comic collection to DC. Under DC’s management for nearly fifteen years, the series was eventually discontinued in 1977. During its run, notable creators like John Romita Sr., Robert Kanigher, Mike Sekowsky, Gene Colan, and Barbara Friedlander contributed to it. Lately, stories from Young Love have been reprinted, and the title served as inspiration for the 2017 Halloween special one-shot, Young Monsters in Love, featuring The Bride on its cover.
From the brief glimpse of the trailer for Creature Commandos, it seems that the in-story DC Universe version of Young Love has a tabloid-like quality to it. This could hint at the complex relationship between The Bride and Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), among other potential implications. Additionally, this Easter egg highlights the expansive nature of the DCU, as it references titles that aren’t solely focused on superheroes. In the comic book industry, there have been rare instances where classic romance comics are acknowledged, with Patsy Walker / Hellcat being one of the few enduring examples.
Creature Commandos follows an elite squad of imprisoned monstrous beings who are called upon for tasks that are too perilous for humans. In dire situations, they represent your least desirable yet potential solution. The cast features Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. This series is based on DC characters and is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register serve as executive producers, with Rick Morales acting as a supervising producer.
Creature Commandos will premiere exclusively on Max on Thursday, December 5th.
