Creature From the Black Lagoon Remake Has James Wan in Talks

As a gamer with a soft spot for classic horror films, I must admit my heart skipped a beat when I heard about the potential return of the Creature From the Black Lagoon! Growing up, I remember late-night viewings of the original 1954 film and being absolutely captivated by its eerie atmosphere and that iconic Gill-Man.

As a lifelong fan of classic horror movies, I can hardly contain my excitement about the potential reboot of “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” Growing up, this film was one of those that kept me awake at night, peeking through the cracks in my bedroom door, my heart pounding with fear and anticipation. The original 1954 version is still etched in my memory, from the eerie underwater scenes to the terrifying creature that seemed to leap out from the shadows at any moment.

If Wan is chosen as the director, this will mark his first film since combining his Atomic Monster label with Blumhouse to form a massive horror studio. Wan would not only direct but also produce the movie in partnership with Michael Clear and Judson Scott from Atomic Monster.

The initial Black Lagoon Monster series encompassed three films: the first one, “Creature From the Black Lagoon,” was released in 1954; followed by “Revenge of the Creature” in 1955 and “The Creature Walks Among Us” in 1956. Over time, efforts have been made to revive this character for modern cinema, with notable industry figures such as John Landis, John Carpenter, and Ivan Reitman involved at different stages throughout the years. At one point, the creature was even slated for Universal’s unsuccessful Dark Universe project.

More recently, the Character has starred as the central figure in a comic series produced by Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment.

In a press release, Skybound editorial director Alex Antone expressed delight about collaborating with writers Dan Watters and Ram V, along with longtime Skybound creators Matthew Roberts and Dave Stewart. He finds it particularly exciting because these talented individuals are crafting a fresh narrative for the iconic Gill-Man in the new title, as opposed to an adaptation of the original film like their previous work, James & Martin’s Dracula.

You can either rent or buy the movie “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (1954) from places that sell films. As for the remake, a release date has not been announced yet.
