As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the worlds of action-RPGs, I must say that the trailer for Crimson Desert left me feeling genuinely intrigued and excited. The combat system, reminiscent of games like Monster Hunter and The Witcher, but with a unique twist of speed and brutality, has me hooked.

Before Gamescom 2024 officially begins, Pearl Abyss, the creators of Black Desert Online, is starting celebrations early by unveiling a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming title, Crimson Desert. This upcoming Xbox and PC game is teased in the trailer through its intense, yet extravagant combat system, as players battle hordes of bandits and a fearsome creature called the White Horn.

For those not familiar, Crimson Desert is an action-RPG set within a grim fantasy realm that features rival factions and colossal creatures threatening destruction. In this world shrouded in darkness, players will take on the character of Kliff, a seasoned mercenary leader known as the Greymane Free Company’s commander.

In this game, your objective is to keep your team of mercenaries alive in this ominous realm. You achieve this by enlisting powerful fighters to reinforce your ranks, accepting tasks and rewards from clients, which you can then use to buy essentials like equipment, weaponry, and protective gear.

At Gamescom 2024, I found myself right smack in the heart of an action-packed mission, as my character, Kliff, was tasked with a daring rescue operation. The objective? To save a band of innocent children who had fallen victim to a group of fearful outlaws, who believed they were angering a colossal, brutal beast known as the White Horn.

Indeed, Kliff firmly rejects their baseless excuses for abducting children and deals with the situation swiftly. During an inquisition to gather information, the leader is confronted by the White Horn who then issues a lethal duel challenge against our main character.

During these instances, we get a glimpse into the game’s battle mechanics, and it appears truly captivating. The combat system seems to echo that of action-RPGs such as Monster Hunter and The Witcher, where you engage in epic battles against colossal beasts using intricate combo moves and predicting their attack patterns to evade or retaliate accordingly.

As an analyst, I find that what sets Crimson Desert’s gameplay apart from its counterparts, as suggested by the trailer, is its rapid and intense nature. In the scene where Kliff was battling bandits, the player seamlessly integrated conventional sword and shield attacks with extraordinary, bone-crushing wrestling maneuvers, which were not only thrilling to witness but also added a unique flavor to the combat system.

During my engagement with the White Horn boss, the creature relentlessly pummels me with a barrage of unending assaults, accompanied by hailstorms meant to pulverize me. When the boss connected with Kliff, I could genuinely empathize with his suffering, as he was hurled through the air and collided with trees and boulders that inflicted staggering damage upon him.

It’s astonishing to note that what we’ve seen so far in Crimson Desert’s combat system is just the beginning. The trailer at Gamescom 2023 revealed a player engaging armies of soldiers using martial arts, bombarding watch towers with explosive arrows, and even scaling up a colossal monster’s body to attack its vulnerable spots, reminiscent of Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Beyond that, Crimson Desert also boasts an expansive open-world teeming with hidden treasures, numerous optional activities and missions, engaging personalities to meet, and a deep, immersive narrative.

If the combat style we’re seeing at the start of Crimson Desert is any indication, the action later on in the game promises to be even more intense. We’ll have to wait until next year to see if this game can live up to its potential as one of the best Xbox games and PC games when it releases for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2025.
