As a cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of Australian cinema over several decades, I must admit that the passing of Burt, the legendary crocodile from Crocodile Dundee, brings a tinge of melancholy to my heart. Having grown up with this iconic film, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia for the simpler times when a man and a croc could steal our hearts with their on-screen adventure.
It’s been confirmed that a legendary actor, known for his role in the hit film Crocodile Dundee, passed away at around 90 years old.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Burt, a beloved five-meter-long saltwater crocodile who captured hearts worldwide in the 1986 film, passed away at his home in Darwin, Australia, on Monday. He had been residing there since 2008.
With deep regret, we share the news on our social media platforms – Crocodile Cove’s Herpetarium and Aquarium: “We mournfully report the demise of Burt, the renowned Saltwater crocodile, and a beloved character from the Australian classic, Crocodile Dundee.
Burt sadly passed away this past weekend, believed to have been well over ninety, signifying the close of a truly remarkable time in our history.
In the 1980s, Burt was apprehended near the Reynolds River prior to his first major movie role. This film saw him sharing the screen with stars like Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski.
Crocosaurus Cove also paid tribute to Burt’s “fiery temperament”.
Burt was well-known for his independent spirit, and the aquarium noted that he had never married – a characteristic evident during his younger days working at a crocodile farm.
His passionate nature gained admiration from both his caretakers and guests, reflecting the wild and uncivilized essence that is characteristic of a saltwater crocodile.
Burt stood out uniquely among all. Not merely a crocodile, he embodied the raw might and grandeur of such powerful and magnificent animals.
Although his character might have been difficult at times, it was precisely this uniqueness that endeared him to everyone who interacted with him or came to see him throughout the years, making him truly unforgettable.
People from various parts of the world were amazed by his towering stature and authoritative demeanor, particularly during meal times.
1986 saw the immediate success of Crocodile Dundee, a film that later secured an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. It also gave rise to two follow-ups: Crocodile Dundee II, released in 1988, and Crocodile Dundelete’s Los Angeles adventure in 2001.
